I Ching Guai Meaning: Hexagram 43 Explained

Yi 益 added to a point must break. Breaking is Guai 夬. Students drawing Guai easily hear war: cut that person, tear that matter, lay it out tonight. That is not the hexagram. Guai must decide, and decide in the open — and it writes clearly 「不利即戎」: not beneficial to take up arms at once. Do not cut with force.

The picture is Lake over Heaven, Dui above Qian. Heaven below — the firm and healthy; lake above — the mouth, speech. Five yang grow upward from below; one length of yin remains at the top. Water piled on Heaven, full, breaks the dike. This is a breach, and a decision. Many people write it as Lü 履, Heaven over Lake. Lü is Qian above Dui: Heaven over the lake, walking by ritual. Reverse above and below and when you should decide you go to talk polite walking, and yin stays in place.

Guai: after increase there must be a break

The Xu Gua says: 「益而不已必決，故受之以夬。夬者，決也。」 Increase without cease must break, so Guai follows. Guai means deciding. Benefits added without stop, the vessel fills, and when full it must open. Opening is deciding. Draw Guai: the matter you asked about has reached the stage of cutting, removing, handling that one yin. Not more research. Decide.

The Tuan says: 「夬，決也，剛決柔也。健而說，決而和。」 Guai is deciding: the firm decides the yielding. Healthy and pleased; decide and then be in accord. Yang decides yin: there must be health, and there must be speech, accord. Speech is joy, using the mouth, using clear words. Accord is being able to tidy after deciding. Only health, no speech: a private takedown. Only speech, no health: shouting without deciding.

The judgment: 「揚于王庭，孚號有厲。告自邑，不利即戎，利有攸往。」 Raise it in the royal court; sincere calling, there is danger. Announce from your own town; not beneficial to take up arms at once; beneficial to go somewhere. These sentences are Guai’s operating manual. Public, sincere, knowing the danger, first telling your own people — not force on the first move.

The Xiang says: 「澤上於天，夬。君子以施祿及下，居德則忌。」 A lake above Heaven, Guai. The superior person extends emolument to those below; dwelling on virtue is to be avoided. While deciding, divide benefits downward. Decide only, and do not give, and those below will not follow you. Dwelling on virtue, treating virtue as a private hoard: this hexagram avoids it.

Career and wealth: clearing, not a bloodbath

Ask about career and draw Guai: as a whole, that long-dragged yin should go. It may be someone who does no work, a rule that always leaks, a partnership you know is harmful and still feed. Raise it in the royal court: put it on the table, speak with facts that can be checked — not by whispers.

Not beneficial to take up arms, in a company: do not humiliate in public, do not fire illegally, do not execute in a group chat. The pleasure of taking up arms is large; so is the aftermath. Announce from your own town: let this circle know first, make the inside clear, then walk outward.

In wealth, Guai looks like taking overflowed water back, deciding a hole away. It suits stopping a bleeding project, releasing a harmful guarantee, making the books clear. It does not suit smashing a position in a temper, or using a lawsuit as the first hand. Beneficial to go somewhere: after deciding you can still walk — not a scorched earth after deciding.

The initial nine: 「壯于前趾，往不勝為咎。」 Strength already in the forward toes; going and not prevailing is blame. Too early. In career the most common picture: you have just decided to clear, people are not yet together, evidence is not yet on the table, and you charge. The toes are strong; the body has not arrived. Draw the initial nine: the heart of deciding can be there. The act of deciding must wait.

Nine in the second: 「惕號，莫夜有戎，勿恤。」 Alert calling; at night there are arms; do not worry. Prepared, a sudden conflict will not frighten you. This line is very practical in Guai: before deciding, have the night’s set of plans. Have them, and do not worry.

Guai in love: if it should be cut, cut — but do not make it a war

Ask about love and draw Guai: there is a yin in the bond that must be decided. It may be a relationship that should not continue, a lie never spoken through, a luck you have fed a long time. A strong woman, an affair, eating inside and working outside: Gou 姤 will speak of that in detail. This stretch of Guai: decide openly to the people concerned — not a public execution for all friends to watch.

Already together, handling a third party or an old account: raising it in the royal court is not posting. It is speaking where both sides can hear, with sincerity, with calling, admitting there is danger. Taking up arms is smashing things, showing a phone in public, pulling family in to surround. The hexagram says not beneficial.

If you are single and draw Guai, often a unclear stretch should be decided, so that going somewhere is beneficial. Do not decide, and the next hexagram’s meeting will meet dirty, because the old yin still hangs at the top.

Upper six: 「無號，終有凶。」 No calling; in the end there is misfortune. Yin at the end, and you still do not call, still do not handle: misfortune in the end. Decide through. Leaving a length of “observe a little more”: the upper six loves that person. Observe to the end, calling is gone, misfortune sits real.

The lines of Guai teach timing and method, not cruelty

Initial nine: 壯于前趾，往不勝為咎. Too early. Force only to the feet. Ask “shall I lay it out tonight”: the initial nine mostly says you will not prevail. First prepare people, evidence, a way back.

Nine in the second: 惕號，莫夜有戎，勿恤. You can decide, but be alert, call. Night trouble is normal. Prepared, you need not fear.

Nine in the third: 壯于頄，有凶。君子夬夬，獨行遇雨，若濡，有慍，無咎. Strength in the cheekbones; there is misfortune. The superior person still decides, walks alone, meets rain, is soaked, is angry: no blame. This line looks like life: you decide, and in the middle you will look bedraggled, be laughed at, walk a stretch alone. Bedraggled is not error. Error is being strong for the face. The cheek is the face. Decide for the face: misfortune. Decide for the matter: wet, still no blame.

Nine in the fifth: 莧陸夬夬，中行無咎. Like pulling amaranth, a soft brittle weed; walking the center, no blame. Nine in the fifth is in position. The object of deciding is often not as hard as you imagine. Walk the middle; do not walk an extreme. The yin that should go, removed by the central way, can drop. Need not take an axe to a weed.

The upper six as above. No calling, misfortune in the end. At this step still not deciding, still not opening the mouth, and yin will drag all the hexagram’s yang. After deciding, the next hexagram is meeting. Deciding is not the end of a life. It is sending that yin away; after that you will meet something new.

In class I most guard two kinds of people in Guai

One kind is strong in the toes. The sentence is not finished, and the person has already charged out. Deciding is right; the time is not. Going, you will not prevail.

One kind has no calling. They know everything, the mouth does not open, waiting for the other person to vanish by themselves. The upper six will not wait for this. Yin will not evaporate because you have cultivation.

The middle road is: raise it in the royal court, sincere calling knowing danger, announce from your own town, not beneficial to take up arms at once. I have students memorize these four lengths, then go handle that person, that matter. Missing one length, Guai easily becomes a brawl or a smother.

Healthy and pleased; decide and then be in accord. After deciding, be in accord — not deciding and then looking for the next person to operate on. Extend emolument to those below, and those below will decide with you. Dwelling on virtue: avoid.

Raising it in the royal court has another layer: the decision must be something you can take out for people to see. A private settlement is allowed. If the private settlement is to hide the ugly, to keep feeding yin, yin is still at the top. The royal court need not be a court of law. It is a place everyone recognizes, where things can be stated clearly. In a family, a table both people sit at. In a company, a meeting that leaves a trace — not a midnight message bombardment.

Five yang deciding one yin looks like force enough. Enough, so walk the center even more. Force enough and still taking up arms: cutting a weed as if it were a city wall, and after the cut people around you fear you too. Amaranth decided: a reminder that the object is often not that hard. What is hard is your face and your hurry.

In divination Guai often appears when asking: should this person stay, should this relationship continue, should this habit stay, should this lawsuit be fought. Yin must first be named. Name it unclear, and deciding decides the people beside. Quitting, stopping a loss, ending a contract, patching a hole that always leaks: Guai’s daily life. Not that you must decide every day. This time it is full to Heaven. If the mouth still does not open, the dike breaks.

I Ching Guai FAQ

If I draw Guai, must I break up, must I fire someone?

Not necessarily those two. There is always a yin that should go. If the question is a partnership, it may be ending one line. If the question is a habit, it may be quitting. Name the “yin” first, then talk method. If the name cannot be said clearly, you will take up arms.

Not beneficial to take up arms: can I never go to court?

Taking up arms is force, hardness, on the first move. A lawsuit is sometimes the royal court, sometimes arms. The difference is whether you first announced from your own town, whether there was sincere calling. Evidence, procedure, your own people clear first, then the law: more like raising it in the royal court. Calling the police and smashing a door in a temper: more like taking up arms.

What is the difference between strength in the toes and strength in the cheekbones?

Toes: too early, the body has not arrived. Cheekbones: too much face, deciding becomes a performance. One is time; one is the heart. Both can walk a decision you should win into blame or misfortune. The superior person decides, and decides again: walks wet, the heart not for the face.

After deciding, is it quiet?

After deciding you will meet. Gou is meeting. The old yin just gone, a new meeting comes, and comes fast. People in Guai most easily, in the emptiness after deciding, meet the next unclear person, unclear chance. Deciding is one length; meeting is the next. Both must be learned.
