Draw Jian 蹇 and students’ first reaction is often: it is over, I cannot walk.

That sentence is only half right. Jian is indeed difficulty. It is not a death sentence. There is danger on the road, and you are still walking. What the hexagram teaches is not crouching forever. It is: do not force this direction.

Get the picture right first. Jian is Water over Mountain, Kan above Gen. Water above — danger; mountain below — stopping. Water on a mountain: the road is slick, broken, hard to see. Many people write it as Meng 蒙, Mountain over Water. Meng is Gen above Kan: mountain over water, youthful folly, education, finding a teacher. Reverse above and below and Jian is taught as “go study” or “wake up,” and the whole board skews.

Jian: after opposition there must be difficulty

The Xu Gua says: 「乖必有難,故受之以蹇。蹇者,難也。」 Opposition must bring difficulty, so Jian follows. Jian means difficulty. Before it is Kui 睽: opposition, not seeing eye to eye. Once people part, once matters twist, the next step is difficulty. So drawing Jian is often not bad luck from nowhere. The stretch of not matching, not opening, each going each way, has already narrowed the road.

The Tuan is very plain: 「蹇,難也,險在前也。見險而能止,知矣哉。」 Difficulty: danger is ahead. Seeing the danger and able to stop: that is wisdom. Seeing it and still stepping on the gas: that is courage, but not the courage this hexagram wants.

The judgment: 「利西南,不利東北。利見大人,貞吉。」 Beneficial to the southwest, not beneficial to the northeast. Beneficial to see a great person; persistence is fortunate. Southwest is relatively level; northeast is more dangerous. Not an order to sleep in place. Do not crash into the more jammed side. Beneficial to see a great person: in this stretch of difficulty you need someone who can carry the matter. Brace it alone and Jian becomes more solid.

The Xiang says: 「山上有水,蹇。君子以反身修德。」 Water on the mountain, Jian. The superior person turns back to cultivate virtue. The road will not walk: first look at yourself. What you repair is the step, not a steeper road built on the mountain.

Career and wealth: change direction, not force

Ask about career and draw Jian: as a whole, going forward is hard. Not that the company falls tomorrow. Progress will be slow, gates will be dense, the line you thought was a straight shot will jam. A new market, a hard negotiation, a hard collision with a superior: all look like walking northeast — the more force, the more you wedge yourself into a crack in the stone.

What matches the hexagram’s qi is turning southwest. In the later-heaven directions southwest is near Kun: level ground, the many, going around. Change partners, change the calendar, break a large aim into small ones, find the person who can actually decide: all southwest. Plans can change, people can be seen. Do not schedule a decisive battle in this stretch. Seeing a great person is not finding a patron to show off. It is finding someone who can state the difficulty clearly and lead people around. Forcing yourself to be the great person when you cannot is also walking northeast.

In wealth, Jian is not broken fortune by necessity. Realization is hard, cash is tight, promised resources arrive late. Large added stakes, guarantees, pushing cash into “one more charge and we pass the gate”: mostly walking into Jian. Guarding liquid funds matters more than chasing return. Money that comes in: pay debts first, fill holes first. Do not treat it as the capital of a reversal.

Jian’s six lines are not equally black. Going forward is called going into Jian; coming back often has something good. In career this sentence is the most useful: if this quarter’s numbers will not push through, first gather what is already done, bring the team back to a place that can operate. The evaluation often looks better than forcing through.

Jian in love: not no feeling — the road is bad to walk

Ask about love and draw Jian: what is common is not cold. Both people want to come close; there is a pit in the middle. Parents, distance, old wounds, time that does not match: water on the mountain. Forcing explanations, forcing a meeting with parents, forcing a public announcement often makes the danger real.

If you are already together, Jian tells you to stop the rhythm of conflict for a while. Not a breakup. This week do not use “do you love me or not” as a gate to charge. Finish the small things in life that can be done. Let the danger stay in front of the eyes; do not step forward onto it. When a great person is needed, it means a third party who can mediate and carry — not a crowd pulled in to judge.

If you are single and draw Jian, it is not a life without a partner. In this stretch, people you meet will be tiring to advance, or the occasion itself is dangerous. Change social life from “it must succeed” to “first see this mountain clearly.” That looks like seeing danger and being able to stop. Smashing Jian with more dates is accelerating on wet stone.

Going into Jian, coming back with praise: most lines teach you to come back

Jian’s six lines have a clear rhythm: go forward, Jian; come back, and there is something. In class I at least make the middle lines clear.

Initial six: 往蹇來譽. Going, Jian; coming, praise. Go at the start and you meet difficulty; come back and there is reputation, evaluation. Draw the first line: not that you are useless. It is not the time to be the vanguard. Step back half a step and others find you steady. New people, new cases, a first appearance: this line is especially accurate.

Six in the second: 王臣蹇蹇,匪躬之故. The king’s servant, Jian upon Jian — not for his own person. The difficulty is not for yourself. A minister in continuous Jian: public duty, loyalty, carrying what one person should not carry. Ask about career and draw six in the second: common in the middle layer. Hard above, hard below, you in between. This line does not tell you to flee. It tells you to recognize: this difficulty is not a private grudge. Do not turn it into temper. Ask about health or a family crisis and six in the second also often appears, because the difficulty is for someone else, not for the self.

Nine in the third: 往蹇來反. Going, Jian; coming, return. Going forward is still Jian; only coming back can you recover the body. The place is already a little high; it is easiest to feel “I have come this far, I cannot stop.” The hexagram says return. Return is not surrender. It is going back to the piece you can stand on. Managers, bosses, people already invested: nine in the third is the hardest, and the one that most needs to be heard.

Six in the fourth: 往蹇來連. Going, Jian; coming, connection. Coming back, you connect with people. In difficulty do not walk alone. Connect. Connect with comrades, fellow travelers, people who can go around with you. Draw six in the fourth: finding companions matters more than finding a shortcut. One person crossing water on a mountain slips easily. Two people calling to each other looks more like southwest.

Nine in the fifth: 大蹇朋來. Great Jian; friends come. Great difficulty, friends come. Nine in the fifth is the ruler’s place: the difficulty is largest, and because the place is correct, people are willing to come. Draw nine in the fifth: not that you have been abandoned. Open the door and let those who can come, come. Shut yourself in the danger playing hero, and friends cannot arrive. A person in charge drawing nine in the fifth: asking for help is not weakness. It is being in position.

Upper six: 「往蹇來碩,吉,利見大人」— going, Jian; coming, something large; fortunate; beneficial to see a great person. The fruit of coming back is larger, and you still need to see a great person. I often remind: Jian’s fortune is rarely written in “charge another hundred meters.” It is written in “you are willing to turn.” After turning you still need someone who can lead you, so “beneficial to see a great person” is written through to the last line.

In class I press only three questions

First, where is the danger. If you cannot state the danger, you will call every unsmoothness Jian, and then dare nothing. Jian is danger ahead, not every cloud in the sky being Kan.

Second, are you walking southwest or northeast. Northeast is more Gen, more jammed, more fighting the stone. Southwest is borrowing terrain, borrowing the many, borrowing a flatter road. The same matter, a different window, a different agent, a different rhythm, is often already southwest.

Third, who is the great person. Beneficial to see a great person is not empty talk. In difficulty, without someone who can decide, lead, be recognized, Jian becomes mutual blame. The great person can be a superior, an elder, a professional, or you picking the authority back up. But in a first-line place, the great person is usually not you.

See danger and be able to stop. After stopping you still walk. The way of walking is going around, connecting, coming back and setting out again — not closing the eyes and pretending there is no water.

“Turning back to cultivate virtue” is not reflection into self-abuse. The road will not walk: first see whether you yourself made northeast the only exit — only one client, only one way of winning, only the hard path. Changing to southwest is sometimes only changing a window, sometimes leaving a Kui relationship untouched for now. Touch it and it is still going into Jian.

This hexagram is most easily used as “my fate is bitter.” Bitter or not is a feeling. Where the danger is, is a fact. State the fact clearly and southwest can be found. Cannot state it, and northeast and southwest look equally steep, and people can only charge or lie down. Neither is wisdom.

In divination Jian often appears when asking: should I still walk this road, still follow this client, transfer, go abroad, operate now. The hexagram does not say never do it. It says this direction has danger now. Far travel, a duel, a hard operation: first change the time, the person, the road, then talk about doing it. Jian in the body is also seeing danger and being able to stop: pain and still adding training, tests and still delaying: walking northeast.

Difficulty will not be difficulty forever. Jian’s next hexagram is Xie 解. Read together: I Ching Xie Meaning | Hexagram 40 How to Read: Deliverance, How to Untie What Has Loosened. I Ching Jian FAQ

If I draw Jian, can this matter not be done?

Not that it cannot be done. This road cannot be walked now. Change to a southwest way of walking and many things can still succeed — only slower, only around. Force a Jian year into a year of decisive battle, and failure looks more like being written dead.

Beneficial to the southwest, not to the northeast: must I move house or change feng shui?

For most questions, treat southwest and northeast as strategy first, not as a moving order. If the question is clearly direction or relocation, then read it as direction. Most people ask about career or love. The sentence says: lean toward the level, the many, what can carry. Do not crash into the more Gen, harder side.

Work is stuck, I drew Jian: should I resign?

You can begin looking at other roads. Do not resign naked in a temper. If resigning is only changing to an equally steep mountain, Jian is still there. First have a next place, first have people you can connect with, then go. Six in the fourth’s “coming, connection” is this.

Original Jian, resulting Xie: are we already out of danger?

The direction walks toward deliverance. The process still has to pass Jian. Danger is still ahead; behind, movement and loosening begin. You can prepare the untying. You need not treat the difficulty today as already gone.
