Draw Meng 蒙 and students love to hear two sentences. One: I am stupid. The other: I am not ready, so I should learn nothing.
Meng is not an insult. Meng is the obscurity of a sprout, eyes not yet open — not eyes gone blind. Zhun 屯 is birth; after birth you are always meng. Whoever just broke the soil cannot see clearly. Treat Meng as a verdict on intelligence and you have already read the hexagram crooked from the first sentence.
There is an opposite misreading: I came to ask, so the teacher should pour the answer out. Meng’s judgment will not eat that. It does not supply as much as you want to ask.
The image: Gen above Kan below, Youthful Folly
Meng is Gen 艮 above, Kan 坎 below. Mountain above, Water below: Youthful Folly. The mountain blocks above; the water below has not found an outlet. The image is a child still covered: a spring inside, no road visible outside. Do not reverse above and below. Water-Mountain is Jian 蹇’s flavor, not the same thing as opening the eyes.
The Xugua says: 「物生必蒙,故受之以蒙。」 Things that are born must be covered; therefore Meng follows. Something has come out; there is always a stretch of not knowing. Not knowing is not an accident. It is sequence. Draw Meng and the matter often sits at “still learning, still asking, still looking for someone to lead.” If you asked “have I already got it” or “can I go teach others and charge tuition,” Meng will pull you back to the student’s seat.
The judgment is this hexagram’s backbone: 「匪我求童蒙,童蒙求我。初筮告,再三瀆,瀆則不告。利貞。」 It is not I who seek the youthful covered one; the youthful covered one seeks me. The first divination, tell them. Ask again and again, entangle again and again: that is irreverence, and irreverence is not told. 利貞: benefit is in correctness and sincerity.
These lines run from method of divination to how people deal with people. For the act of asking: shake the same matter three times and the heart is already not respectful. Later hexagrams tend to be your anxiety, not the hexagram’s answer. For teaching, consulting, leading newcomers: if the other person has not come to seek, and you first stuff a pile of principle at them, the effect is poor. If they have come to seek, you answer once. If they only want to hear what they want to hear, and keep changing the question until you change your mouth, you can stop. Meng writes the direction of “seeking” in stone. The teacher waits for the student to come. The teacher does not chase the student asking to be understood.
The Xiang says a spring issues under the mountain, Meng; the superior person acts with resolve and nourishes virtue. The spring coming out under the mountain has to flow and be raised. 果行 is doing things with decision; 育德 is raising a person up. Draw Meng and it is not telling you to stay lost forever. It is walking with the eyes opening as you go.
Career and wealth when you draw Meng
Ask about career and draw Meng: the common reading is not “this line has no future.” It is “in this matter you are still youthful folly.” New industry, new post, new tool, new market: you have not entered the door, yet you want to talk price with an old-timer’s manner. Meng will let that kind of person hit a wall.
What fits the hexagram is earthy: find a teacher, a master, someone who has done it; pay the tuition clearly; ask the question clearly. Asking once until it is clear is more useful than changing strategy every day. In a career, Meng suits further study, being an assistant, learning on a project. It does not suit hanging “director” on day one, opening a class and charging, or slapping your chest to a client and saying no problem.
For wealth, Meng’s money is mostly tuition, the cost of trial and error, money you put in first and only then understand. Ask “have I already seen through this investment,” draw Meng, and the answer leans not yet. You can try a small amount. Do not treat principal as a diploma that you have already graduated. Some people read Meng as side wealth. That is the wrong hexagram. Meng is not falling from the sky. You still cannot see, so you can gamble even less.
If you are the one leading people and draw Meng, the career key is nine in the second’s 「包蒙」: wrapping, holding people who still cannot. New people on the team are not a disaster. They are this hexagram’s proper work. If you only want people who can fight on day one, Meng will keep you short of people, because people who can already do it will not wait on that temper.
Ask about exams, licenses, a thesis: Meng is one of the right hexagrams. It says you are learning, not that you will fail. 初筮告: review needs a main thread; asking a teacher needs the capacity to ask once and finish. Changing reference books, teachers, and methods every day is asking again and again. Irreverence is not told, and the score is not told either.
Love and people when you draw Meng
Ask about love and draw Meng: someone in the relationship still does not know how to behave, or still does not know this relationship’s rules. Not a moral verdict. A matter of degree. Someone just entering love, just entering marriage, just becoming a parent: all can be meng.
The judgment is very sharp in love: if the other person has not come to ask, and you first give a class, they will not take it in. If they have come to ask, you answer once with a true heart. If they only want to hear you admit defeat, want to hear you change your mouth, that is close to irreverence. Explain more in irreverence and the relationship gets muddier.
If you are single and draw Meng, you may meet someone a stretch apart in age or experience, or you yourself still do not know what you want, yet you first go collecting people. Finish asking “what am I seeking,” then go seek a person. The youthful covered one seeks me: first the sincerity of seeking, then the content of telling.
If you are already together, Meng often appears when one side manages the other like a child, or one side truly is like a child. Managing depends on whether it is 發蒙 or 擊蒙. Opening the cover is opening, giving rules. Striking the cover is hitting, frightening. The upper nine says it is not beneficial to be a robber; it is beneficial to fend off robbers. You can prevent and block the bad. Do not first go and invade the other person. The ugliest Meng in love is teaching as a name and control as the fact.
With people, Meng advises you to see clearly who is seeking teaching and who is coming to play. Those who come to seek: tell. Those who come to play, to fish for words, to keep you on infinite standby: you can not tell. That is not cold. It is the judgment’s amulet for the teacher. Consultants, managers, parents: all can use it.
Four lines of Meng you must know
Initial six: 發蒙,利用刑人,用說桎梏,以往吝. Opening the cover. 利用刑人 is not telling you to harm people. It is using clear rules, boundaries you can feel, so a person knows what they cannot do. 用說桎梏, taking off the fetters: rules exist so a person can walk free, not so they are locked forever. 以往吝: open the cover and then keep charging outward, and there will be cause for regret. Draw the initial six: leading newcomers, children, or yourself, first set rules. There can be a penalty; after the penalty the person must still be able to walk. Keep punishing and never teaching content: that is not opening the cover. That is establishing authority.
Nine in the second: 包蒙吉,納婦吉,子克家. Wrap: hold this group who are still covered. 納婦吉: you can receive people in. 子克家: the next generation or the people under you can hold up the household. This is the line in Meng that most looks like a teacher, and also like a middle manager. Draw nine in the second: the luck is not that you yourself know everything. It is that you can cover those who do not. In work it suits leading a team, and marrying and making a household — receiving people in. Narrow the chest and the word “wrap” breaks.
Six in the fifth: 童蒙,吉. Six in the fifth is the ruler’s place, yet it calls itself youthful folly. The person above still willing to be a student: that is luck. Draw six in the fifth: study, seeking a teacher, seeing a doctor, asking an advisor — all go smoothly. The premise is you truly take yourself as youthful folly, not modest in the mouth while feeling you already understand. A manager who draws six in the fifth: listening to people on the front line is more useful than giving your own presentation.
Upper nine: 擊蒙,不利為寇,利禦寇. Meng at the top sometimes needs a strike, a blow to the head. The purpose of striking is fending off robbers: blocking harm from outside, blocking a bad habit — not becoming a robber yourself. Draw the upper nine: education, management, quitting an addiction, cutting off harmful friends, can use hardness. After hardness, stop. Hard all the way and the teacher becomes the robber, the student the enemy, and the hexagram flips.
The initial six is rules. Nine in the second is holding. Six in the fifth is willing to learn. The upper nine is striking when you should, not invading when you should not. The four lines together are opening the eyes, not throwing a tantrum.
The classroom misunderstanding I correct most often
Students read Meng as “I already know it; I am one step from the finish.” Meng is not one step from the finish. It is opening the eyes, beginning to understand, not the graduation exam. If you already knew it, you usually would not draw this hexagram; if you did, it is mostly that you are covered again on a new layer. A person who can drive, first time on the road test, is still meng. A person who can cook, first time opening a shop, is also meng.
Another practical error: asking the same matter until the teacher changes their mouth. That is irreverence. In class I set a rule: for one matter, the hexagram that was asked clearly the first time is the main one. Ask again later, change the question. You cannot change the answer. Study is the same. Books swapped back and forth, the heart not held correct, and telling will not go in.
One more layer: it is not I who seek the youthful covered one. You rushing to teach people who have not come to seek will leave you tired and resentful. Family, partners, people under you: all like this. Make a gift into a lesson and the other person will not thank you. Wait until they come to ask, and one sentence of yours is more useful than ten classes.
Draw Meng and I have people first pick a side: this time am I the youthful covered one, or the one being sought? If you cannot tell, teaching is wrong and learning is wrong.

I Ching Meng FAQ
Does drawing Meng mean study is unfavorable, I will fail?
Meng is being in study, not a code for bombing an exam. Six in the fifth, youthful folly, luck: willing to be a student, exams are often steadier. What is unfavorable is asking again and again: method changing every day, all-nighters swapping teachers, treating divination as a guessing machine. Holding to one set of notes is more useful than holding to ten predictions.
I want to seek a teacher and drew Meng. Will they take me?
The hexagram encourages you to go seek, and to go seek yourself. It is not I who seek the youthful covered one; the youthful covered one seeks me. Prepare sincerity, tuition, and time, and ask clearly once: that is the first divination. Chasing them on social media until they are annoyed: that is irreverence. Whether they take you depends on them, and on how you seek.
Leading children or newcomers and drawing Meng: can I be strict?
Yes. The initial six already has punishment and fetters; the upper nine can still strike. Strictness is for opening the cover and fending off robbers, not for venting. Wrapping and striking are two tools. People in nine in the second use wrapping more; the situation of the upper nine uses striking. Hit from start to finish and the child will be afraid, not understand.
I asked the same question three times and all were Meng. What now?
Stop first. Irreverence is not told; a fourth time need not be asked. Go back and do one concrete learning action: attend a class, do problems, ask a living person once. Meng depends on practice, not on shaking the hexagram until you are satisfied.
