Tai 泰 is the hexagram in a reading that lets people exhale. Not because it is mysterious. Because the picture is clear: Earth above, Heaven below — Peace.

Heaven should be above; Earth should be below. Now they are reversed: yang qi rising, yin qi descending, the two meeting in the middle. Meeting is interchange. Interchange, and qi opens. The hexagram that does not open is its reverse: Standstill, Pi 否.

So Tai is not empty talk that “everything is fine.” It is opening. Ask about a matter and draw Tai: above and below, inside and outside, you and the other person, this while, are open. When it is open, do the work. Do not only take photos as a souvenir.

Why Tai comes after Lü 履

The Xugua says: 「履而泰,然後安。」 Before it is Lü, walking carefully, by the rules. Walk steadily, then Tai comes.

This line is useful for a reading. Draw Tai and it is often not pie falling from the sky. The careful stretch before is starting to show. The people you should see, you have seen; the road that should open, has opened. If someone has done nothing, suddenly asks “will I suddenly get rich” and draws Tai, I still ask: have you trodden? Tai without Lü is more like a window of luck. Windows close.

The Tuan says 「小往大來,吉亨」. The small, the unfavorable, go out; the great, the useful, come in. Draw Tai and whatever you asked, you can match this: old resistance retreats, new conditions come. But small going and great coming is not forever. Tai’s next hexagram is Pi. In fullness, if you do not know how to hold back, opening becomes blockage.

Career and wealth: you can push, do not push full

Ask about career and draw Tai: good for expanding, talking, taking a plan out of the drawer. People are willing to match; resources are more in place. Interviews, cooperation, a launch, moving house, going public: all Tai’s application scenes.

For wealth, Tai is like a waterway open. What should come in, comes in; terms that should be talked, can be talked. You can invest, add stakes, and still leave a cut for “Tai will turn to Pi.” My teaching is earthy: in a Tai year thicken the principal. Do not fill the leverage. When it is open everyone is optimistic. Optimism is Pi’s seed.

Tai has a line often skipped: nine in the third, 「無平不陂,無往不復」. No road that is only level, never sloping; no momentum that only goes and never returns. Draw nine in the third: the matter is still good, but you already have to start guarding a turn. This is Tai’s most teacher-like sentence.

Upper six, 「城復于隍」: the wall collapses back into the moat. Tai at the end: what was built will collapse back to its original state. Draw the upper six: not telling you to despair. Telling you not to add another storey. First reinforce, first hold back.

People and love: when it is open, come and go; do not pretend to be busy

Ask about love and draw Tai: the relationship is open. If you are single, it is easier to meet the right occasion, the right person, and both are willing to go forward. If you are already together, Tai is making up, getting the words open, qi that can push the relationship toward marriage or living together.

When it is open, the worst is pretending to be busy. The other person puts out a hand and you say wait a little more: Tai’s window passes. Of course also do not, once it is open, marry, partner, stuff all life decisions into the same week. Tai gives you a road open, not thinking it through for you.

Workplace people and Tai: above and below are easier to talk to. Good for communicating, asking for support, taking a misunderstanding apart. Words that would not go in before, spoken now, have a better chance of being heard.

What Tai really teaches in ease is how not to finish it

Modern people who draw a lucky hexagram easily do two things: set off fireworks, or think they finally guessed right. Tai encourages neither.

Tai encourages you, while it is open, to do three concrete things:

  1. Push the matter that should be pushed. Do not wait for a more perfect time. Now is it.
  2. Be a little better to people who helped you, matched you. Opening is everyone opening together.
  3. Leave a back hand. Nine in the third already forecast that the level will become a slope. Cash, credit, the body: do not use them up in Tai.

Put it this way and Tai is not chicken soup. It is a pass that says “you can walk now.” Passes have an expiry.

I Ching Tai FAQ

Is Tai great luck, can I do anything?

The large direction is luck, opening. Still look at the matter you asked and the line you are on. Tai of the upper six: luck is already being taken back. Illegal, harming the body, harming people: will not become correct because you drew Tai.

I drew Tai and the other person has not replied. Is the reading wrong?

You may not have asked the same thing. You asked “is this relationship open,” the hexagram says open; the other person may have asked “should I go public now.” Open does not mean both have the same rhythm. Tai gives conditions, not action on the same day.

How is Tai different from Qian 乾?

Qian is you yourself having to be strong, to advance. Tai is above and below meeting, the environment opening with you. Qian can fly by itself in adversity. Tai is more like time, place, and people happening to be on the same side. Draw Tai and do nothing yourself: opening is also wasted. Draw Qian and the environment is very blocked: you have to force through yourself, and the cost is different.

How do I know Tai is starting to turn to Pi?

In people, hearts start not meeting; meetings start spinning empty; promises start delaying: qi is scattering. If a changing line goes to the upper six, or the original hexagram Tai changes to Pi: that is in plain writing. Reduce stakes then, smarter than adding.
