Draw Wu Wang 無妄 and students often split in two camps. One hears “no reckless thought, everything lucky.” One only remembers “disaster without recklessness,” and feels they are about to have bad luck.

Neither camp is accurate. Wu Wang is Heaven over Thunder, Innocence. Thunder walking under Heaven; the ten thousand things grow by their own hour, not by a person’s fantasy. This hexagram’s luck is built on “correct.” Not correct, there is fault. Sometimes disaster is also not what you sought. Treat Wu Wang as a death-exemption badge, or as a disaster label: in class both have to be changed.

Heaven over Thunder: move on the correct path; not correct, there is disaster

Wu Wang is Heaven over Thunder, Innocence. Upper Qian 乾, Heaven; lower Zhen 震, Thunder. Under Heaven, thunder is walking. Thunder moves, Heaven is strong: moving and strong. Not still emptying the heart of desire. When you move, you do not mess around.

Do not reverse above and below. Some people read Wu Wang as Fire over Thunder, Shi He 噬嗑, or Mountain over Heaven, Da Xu 大畜. Shi He is biting through, jail. Da Xu is stopping the firm and strong, accumulating. Wu Wang sits between Fu 復 and Da Xu: first return, then not reckless, then you can talk of storing. Misread the hexagram and the advice will reverse.

The Xugua says: 「復則不妄矣,故受之以無妄。」 Return, then not reckless; therefore Wu Wang follows. Fu is returning to the correct path. Come back, and the next step is not being reckless again. So Wu Wang is not sudden enlightenment. It is homework after Fu. People just turned back most easily fill the hollow with another kind of recklessness: a new plan, a new person, a new slogan. This hexagram comes to block that.

The judgment first gives full: 「無妄,元亨利貞。」 All four virtues. Then immediately takes in: 「其匪正有眚,不利有攸往。」 Not correct, there is fault. Not correct and still going forth: no benefit. Bo 剝 is in sequence not beneficial to go. Wu Wang is conditionally not beneficial to go: you are correct, you can go; you are not correct, go and there is fault. Do not memorize the two hexagrams as the same sentence.

The Tuan says: 「無妄,剛自外來而為主於內。動而健,剛中而應。大亨以正,天之命也。」 The firm comes from outside and is host within: that one yang of the lower trigram’s initial nine. Move and strong: Zhen plus Qian. Great opening by correctness: Heaven’s mandate. Not correct, there is fault, not beneficial to go forth. Wu Wang going forth, where to? Heaven does not protect; will you go? Not correct and still leaving the door: Heaven will not help; where are you going.

The Xiang says: 「天下雷行,物與無妄。先王以茂對時育萬物。」 Thunder walking under Heaven, things joining in Wu Wang. The former kings vigorously matched the time and raised the ten thousand things. Things grow following the hour. What people should do is match the time, not their own script. Draw Wu Wang and still force a result, force a change of season: that is recklessness.

Career and wealth: first ask whether this step is correct

Ask about career and draw Wu Wang: overall you can move, on the condition this step stands. Good for finishing what should be done, saying clearly what should be said, walking the process that should be walked. Not good for shortcuts, brushing presence, swapping a story for resources. Great opening, benefit, correctness are real, but they follow “without recklessness,” not “without shame.”

The most expensive tuition then is “my motive is good, so I can go a little faster.” Wu Wang looks at correctness, not only motive. Starting work before a contract is complete, taking money before a license, promoting before there is data: all not correct. The judgment already wrote there is fault. Fault is an excess you brought, not luck dropped from Heaven.

For wealth, Wu Wang is more like income according to proper work: salary, legitimate trade, making the goods real. A side door, inside information, selling a field not yet farmed: most hits this hexagram. Six in the second speaks of not harvesting while ploughing, not treating unopened waste as ripe fields. In class I often use it to advise investment: do not, while not yet working, calculate the harvest; do not quote waste ground as ripe ground. Do it by the solar term: then going forth is beneficial instead.

Wu Wang is not all six lines lucky. The initial nine, going is lucky; the upper nine, acting has fault. In the middle there is also disaster without recklessness, do not medicate, there will be joy. Draw Wu Wang and you must look at the line. The same “not reckless”: some tell you to go, some not to move, some not to take medicine wildly.

Love: fewer stories, and fewer scalpels to treat

Ask about love and draw Wu Wang: what the relationship most fears is recklessness — guessing wildly, promising wildly, changing the other person wildly. The correct practice is earthy: meet when you should meet, finish the words when they should be finished, do not hang people who should not be there. Great opening, benefit, correctness used in love is lasting, correct — not sweet.

If you are already together, Wu Wang reminds two things. One: do not invent reasons to keep a person. Two: if the other person has no great illness, do not treat them as a project to reform. Nine in the fifth, 「無妄之疾,勿藥有喜」: illness without recklessness, do not medicate, there will be joy. Some discomfort will pass itself. You put a hand to it, and a small illness becomes large. Reckless medicine in love is commonly checking a phone, writing a self-criticism, forcing a promise. Draw nine in the fifth: stop the hand first.

If you are single and draw Wu Wang, a connection can move, but do not recognize it recklessly. Just finished Fu and immediately bind the next stretch: treating a hollow as Heaven’s mandate. Not correct, there is fault: that incorrect stretch, go and it will hurt. Live life correctly and a person can come. Use means to lock, and Heaven will not protect.

Workplace people and Wu Wang: less passing words, less taking sides, less speaking a matter that has not happened as already happened. The disaster-without-recklessness line often appears in people: the ox was not stolen by you, yet tied at your door; a passer-by leads it away, and the townsperson is unlucky. You may be the townsperson. Then rushing to clear yourself, rushing to bite back, easily goes deeper. First untie the rope: leave the traces that should be left, do not take on responsibility that should not be taken.

Not reckless is moving on the correct path, not a guarantee of no disaster

In class I teach Wu Wang’s lines as three layers: what happens if correct, what if not, what can still happen if correct.

Initial nine: 無妄,往吉. From the start walk the correct, going is lucky. Draw this line: the matter is beneficial to move. Drag and not do it: spending correct qi in hesitation instead. Wu Wang is not telling you to sit and cultivate the heart. It is telling you the first step lands right.

Six in the second: 不耕獲,不菑畬,則利有攸往. Ploughing is this year’s field; opening waste is 菑; ripe fields are 畬. Do not, while ploughing, have only harvest in the eyes; do not, waste not yet opened, sell it as three years later’s harvest. Draw this line: a plan can exist; expectation should be thin. Finish the farm work of the present, then going is beneficial. Many people hear this as “gain without labor.” That is reading it backwards. It is blocking reckless seeking.

Six in the third: 無妄之災,或繫之牛,行人之得,邑人之災. Disaster without recklessness: perhaps an ox tied, a passer-by’s gain, a townsperson’s disaster. An ox tied at the village edge, a passer-by leads it away; the passer-by gains, the village is taken as thieves. Disaster is not because you were reckless. It is because you were in that place. Draw this line: first tell apart — is it your recklessness, or being implicated. Implicated: what to do is lead the ox off the roadside, keep evidence, not punish yourself at home. Of course also check: why did you tie the ox on a road passers-by must take.

Nine in the fifth: 無妄之疾,勿藥有喜. The illness you got is illness without recklessness, not a disease you made. Do not medicate wildly; there will be joy. Draw this line: health, a process, a relationship may all show “looks like it should be handled, actually handle it and it is worse.” Observe, a schedule, wait a cycle: more right than heavy medicine. Not that all illness is not treated. This line’s illness, do not treat recklessly.

Upper nine: 無妄,行有眚,無攸利. At the top still wanting to act. The time has passed. Even if the motive is not reckless, moving still has excess, no benefit. Wu Wang is not forever able to go. The initial nine’s going lucky, at the upper nine becomes acting has fault. Draw this line: hold back. The matter has already been correct, already walked; add another stroke and it is recklessness.

So when people say “I drew Wu Wang, very lucky” or “I drew Wu Wang, I will meet disaster,” ask again: correct or not? Which line? Go or not go, medicine or not: the answer differs a long way.

In class I only ask Wu Wang three sentences

First, did this step walk a process? Fast without process is mostly recklessness.

Second, are you seeking harvest, or doing the present farm work? Head full of harvest, and the field will be fake.

Third, this disaster in front of you: did you make it, or the ox led away? Made it, change. Led away: leave a trace, untie the rope, do not take medicine wildly.

Answer clearly and Wu Wang is read. After Fu, Wu Wang; after Wu Wang you can store. The previous hexagram: I Ching Fu Meaning | Hexagram 24 How to Read: Return, Catching the Turn. The next hexagram has to store the firm and strong: I Ching Da Xu Meaning | Hexagram 26 How to Read: Great Accumulation, Storing Force. How to read the firm and strong itself: still return to I Ching Qian Meaning | Hexagram 1 How to Read: Hidden Dragon to Arrogant Dragon. Wu Wang’s upper trigram is Qian. Strong is fine; reckless is not.

I Ching Wu Wang FAQ

Does Wu Wang mean I am pure, so it will definitely go smoothly?

Wu Wang requires you to be correct. It does not issue you a purity certificate. The judgment itself wrote not correct, there is fault. People feeling themselves without recklessness often only have not yet seen that strip of recklessness. Draw this hexagram: first check process, then talk of going smoothly.

Can disaster without recklessness be avoided?

Some can, some cannot. Six in the third’s kind: the place is by the road; disaster will brush you. What you can do is less tying valuables on a passers-by road; after something happens, leave a trace, do not admit wildly, do not bite back wildly. Changing a date cannot change “where you tied the ox.”

I asked about health and drew Wu Wang. Should I see a doctor?

Depends which line. Nine in the fifth emphasizes do not medicate. The initial nine, go if you should go, check if you should check. Do not medicate is blocking reckless treatment: changing medicine, stacking medicine, listening to folk remedies before checking clearly. Correct medicine is not recklessness. Hearing do not medicate as refusing medical care is itself recklessness.

The upper nine is already without recklessness. Why still fault?

The time has passed. Correct also has to match the time. Wearing summer clothes in winter: the clothes are not wrong; the time is wrong. Draw the upper nine: not telling you to learn bad. Telling you to stop. Act again, and Heaven will not protect.
