I Ching Gen Meaning: Hexagram 52 Explained

Draw Gen 艮 and many people hear two words: you may not move.

That is hearing a mountain as a grave. Gen is stopping, and the Tuan writes clearly: 「時止則止，時行則行。動靜不失其時，其道光明。」 When it is time to stop, stop; when it is time to move, move. Movement and stillness not missing the time: the way is bright. Stop when you should stop; when you should walk, you still walk. Stopping is not death. It is parking force in the right place. Stop in the wrong place, and the mountain presses people. Stop correctly, and the mountain is a barrier.

Gen as Mountain: Gen above and below. Two mountains facing, neither leaning on the other. The Xu Gua says: 「物不可以終動，止之，故受之以艮。艮者，止也。」 Things cannot move forever; stop them, so Gen follows. Gen means stopping. Before it is Zhen 震. Zhen is thunder, movement, that sudden strike. After movement there must be stopping, or thunder will scatter people. So Gen is not Zhen’s reverse enemy. It is Zhen’s next lesson. In class these two hexagrams are always taught together: first, in fear, hold the spoon and wine; then, when it should be set down, set it down.

Gen: stilling the back is not telling you to be wood

The judgment: 「艮其背，不獲其身，行其庭，不見其人，無咎。」 Still the back; do not obtain the body; walk the courtyard, do not see the person; no blame. Stop at the back. The back is a place you cannot see, and a place desire grabs less outward. Not obtaining the body is not having no body. It is not wrapping yourself into the object you want to grab. Walk through the courtyard, not colliding with anyone: no blame.

This sentence is taught very mystically. Dropped into divination it is earthy: take the eyes off “the thing that itches the heart,” stop in a place you need not stare, and the matter instead does not invite trouble. Not an order to be without feeling. Look one glance less; less desire, less disaster. What is hardest now is not having no mountain. It is pictures everywhere telling you to look. Still the back: first stop the gaze.

The Tuan says above and below oppose and answer, they do not join. All six lines oppose; there is no joining. Gen’s relations are often each stopping each — not a break, this stretch not suitable for sticking. Ask about a partnership, about love, draw Gen: first accept that the other person will not walk toward you now. You chase, and you are using Zhen’s method to hit a mountain.

Career and wealth: first ask whether this step should stop

Ask about career and draw Gen: as a whole, do not open a new battlefield. Plans can be written, people can be seen. Contracts, expansion, a public challenge: mostly stop. The mountain is there. You can go around. You cannot crash. In wealth, Gen is not bankruptcy. Funds do not move, a sale stops midway, what should come in is still behind the mountain. Push a sum hard, and you often break your own waist in a nine-in-the-third place.

Gen does not tell every line to resign and go home. The initial six: 「艮其趾，無咎，利永貞。」 Still the toes; no blame; beneficial to persist long. The toes stop, you have not walked out: no blame. This is braking at the first thought, the lowest cost. Draw the initial six: that angry email, that impulsive order, that gathering you temporarily agreed to — stop at the toes. Cheaper than stopping halfway.

Six in the second: 「艮其腓，不拯其隨，其心不快。」 Still the calves; not rescuing what follows; the heart is not glad. The calves stop, and you cannot save the follower who still wants to go forward; the heart is not pleased. Common in career: you yourself want to stop, above or below still drags you, you stop neither clean nor glad. This line does not tell you to follow for the sake of being glad. It admits that stopping will be uncomfortable. Not glad, and it can still be right.

In wealth, Gen suits guarding what you have, not chasing highs. There is ore in the mountain. Mining is not Gen’s image. Gen’s image is stopping. Park existing principal, clients, skill on a safe slope. More important than climbing another mountain you have not seen clearly. Ask about investing and draw Gen: I often advise, if you cannot see the whole body of this sum, do not gamble the whole body. Not obtaining the body, in money: do not put the person in as a loss.

Gen in love: stop looking — not as pretty as “stop loving”

Ask about love and draw Gen: two people like two mountains. In the courtyard you can see a shadow; the hearts have not met. Not necessarily a breakup. Now is not the time to force marriage, force getting back together, chase every day with “what are you thinking.” Walk the courtyard, do not see the person: you met, and it is as if you did not meet the real person. Ask further, and the other person will turn the back more dead.

If you are already together, Gen is often one side needing to stop desire, stop the mouth, stop pointless proving. Still the back: stare less at the other person’s phone, less at the portion they owe you. The place you stare is often exactly desire. Stop the gaze on the work you should do, and the relationship instead has no blame. Six in the fifth: 「艮其輔，言有序，悔亡。」 Still the jaws; speech has order; regret vanishes. Stop at the jaw; words have sequence; regret then vanishes. The most expensive regret in love is often a sentence that would not stop. Draw six in the fifth: first arrange the order of speaking. What should be said, say. What should not, stop at the jaws.

If you are single and draw Gen, this stretch is not for chasing too tight. A match can be there. A mountain is also there. The person has not turned around, and you go around to the front to block: you make no blame into blame. First stop your own restlessness. Live the life into a steady mountain. More useful than sending a third message.

Family, a team, drawing Gen: often you must stop on a boundary. Whose matter who stops, whose mouth who manages. Above and below oppose and answer, they do not join: not an order to oppose. This stretch, do not force harmony. Harmony waits for the time of moving, then harmonize.

The smoked-heart line must be taught clearly

Nine in the third: 「艮其限，列其夤，厲薰心。」 Still the limit; splitting the spinal flesh; dangerous, the heart smoked. Xian 限 is the waist. Stop at the waist, spinal flesh as if split, danger, the heart smoked. The waist is the border of above and below. A person most should not jam dead here. Draw nine in the third: in career, common that going and stopping both jam in the middle — a post stuck, a project stuck, a move stuck, the body first showing the waist, sleep, a restless heart. Stopping is not stopping dead. When it is time to stop, stop; when it is time to move, move. Nine in the third makes “stop” into “the whole person folded at the middle,” so the heart is smoked.

This line I have students check three things: have you stopped what should not be stopped too? Are you using stopping to punish someone else, and smoking your own heart? Is the body reporting the waist? Ask about health and draw Gen: nine in the third is the brightest. Not mysterious retribution. A person jammed between going and stopping, and fire smokes toward the heart.

Six in the fourth: 「艮其身，無咎。」 Still the body; no blame. Stop in your own person: no blame. This is Gen’s cleaner line. Manage your own range; do not manage which way someone else’s legs walk. Upper nine: 「敦艮，吉。」 Honest Gen; fortunate. Stopping thick, stopping solid: fortunate. A mountain at the top is not sharper. It is more honest. Draw the upper nine: make stopping a steady character, not a sulk-strike, and it is fortunate.

The initial six stills the toes; six in the second stills the calves and is not glad; nine in the third stills the waist and smokes the heart; six in the fourth stills the body; six in the fifth stills speech; the upper nine stills honestly. The higher you go, the more stopping should look like a mountain’s thickness, not a rope’s bind.

In class I teach Gen against Zhen

Zhen comes: people fear, move, smash a plan. After fear, protect the spoon and wine, and there must still be a concrete move. Move and do not stop, and you are in thunder all day. Gen follows, teaching you to stop. Students often use the two backward: when they should move they use Gen, playing dead at home; when they should stop they use Zhen, answering messages all night. Draw which hexagram, first call the name: this time, thunder, or mountain.

When it is time to stop, stop; when it is time to move, move. I have them draw two columns on paper. What must stop this week: left. What still must walk this week: right. Gen is not a blank right column. The right can have: sleep, delivering work, bringing a child home, holding one sentence. The left is often: do not sign, do not confess, do not add a position, do not cut hard in a nine-in-the-third place. If they can draw it, the way is bright. If they cannot, stopping becomes depression.

Still the back has a modern use too: turn off notices you should not look at. The gaze stops, desire lessens a length. Lessen a length, walk through the courtyard, less likely to collide.

I Ching Gen FAQ

If I draw Gen, is this matter dead?

Not necessarily dead. Now it should stop. Many things stop a length and then can be walked through. Treat Gen as an ending, and you stop dead even the timing that should be fed. Look at the line: the initial six, six in the fourth, upper nine’s stopping is often fortunate. Nine in the third’s stopping truly injures.

Gen and Qian (Modesty) both have a mountain. How do I tell them apart?

Qian (Modesty) is Earth over Mountain: a mountain under the earth, height hidden. Gen is Gen as Mountain: two mountains facing, the homework is stopping. Modesty asks whether the place can be set down. Gen asks whether movement and stillness match the time. Draw Modesty and you can still walk — only, walking, do not press people with height. Draw Gen: first ask whether this step should go out.

Love stuck in Gen: does the other person have no heart?

It may be no heart. It may be the time not yet arrived, desire that should stop first, speech that should have order first. Force Gen with “does he not love me,” and you walk the courtyard into a battlefield. First still the jaws, clean your own speech, then see whether the other person turns. Still not seeing the person: ask the next hexagram. More useful than hitting the mountain every day.

Work stalled, I drew Gen: can I quit and travel?

You can stop the charge at work. It need not become flight. Still the body is stopping in the range you should keep — not throwing the whole range away. If you truly go, see whether it is the time to move. Use travel to hide from nine in the third’s smoked heart, and the heart will smoke with the luggage. First loosen the waist from the jam, then decide moving or stopping.
