I Ching Jian (Gradual) Meaning: Hexagram 53

Draw Jian (Gradual) 漸 and students are sometimes disappointed: neither great fortune nor great misfortune — what am I to do.

Jian is what you are to do: go in, station by station. Not that you cannot go in. You cannot skip. Wild geese from the water’s edge to a boulder, to land, to a tree, to a height: each station has a name. Marriage, promotion, immigration, learning a craft: all this hexagram’s topics. Want to fly to the height in one go, and nine in the third’s “the husband campaigns and does not return, the wife is pregnant and does not rear” is waiting.

Jian (Gradual) is Wind over Mountain, Xun above Gen. Xun above — wind; Gen below — mountain. Wind on a mountain: the wind goes in slowly, because underneath is stopping. Stop, then Xun: therefore you go in without disorder. Above and below cannot reverse. Reverse it and you have Gu 蠱, Mountain over Wind: another account, spoilage to be treated. Jian’s full name is Feng Shan Jian (風山漸). Going in is its proper subject.

Jian (Gradual): things cannot stop forever, so gradual advance follows

The Xu Gua says: 「物不可以終止，故受之以漸。漸者，進也。」 Things cannot end in stopping, so Jian follows. Jian means advance. Before it is Gen 艮. Gen parked movement, and a matter cannot stop forever. After stopping, go in; the way of going in is gradual. In class this sentence is useful: draw Gen, you learned to stop. The next lesson is not charging. It is flying like a goose, by the terrain.

The Tuan says: 「漸之進也，女歸吉也。進得位，往有功也。進以正，可以正邦也。」 Jian’s advance: a woman’s marriage is fortunate. Advance obtaining a seat, going has merit. Advance through correctness, and you can correct a state. A woman’s marriage is fortunate: a woman marrying walks by ritual, fortunate. Gui 歸 is returning to the husband’s house. The point is “advance through correctness,” not “finally married off.” The judgment’s core is four characters: 「女歸吉，利貞」— a woman’s marriage is fortunate; beneficial to persist. Persistence is correctness, settling — not dragging. Jian’s fortune is in the road right, the station right. Road wrong, and going in is also disaster.

So ask about marrying and draw Jian: I will say the direction is good. Ask about marrying and draw Gui Mei 歸妹, and I frown first. Gui Mei is speech that moves, a younger sister marrying, and the judgment writes to campaign is unfortunate, nothing beneficial. Both hexagrams speak of marriage; the tempers are opposite. Career and wealth: walk by station names; do not invent a shortcut

Ask about career and draw Jian (Gradual): it suits promotion, licensing, transferring departments, immigration, moving a long craft up. Xun is wind, entering; Gen is stopping, a foundation. A mountain underneath, and wind goes in steadily. In wealth, Jian rarely has windfall. It is like a goose’s food: six in the second, 「鴻漸于磐，飲食衎衎，吉」— the goose gradual on a boulder, eating and drinking at ease, fortunate. Landing on a boulder, eating steadily, glad: fortunate. This is Jian’s most comfortable line. Work has a place, salary has a rhythm, a person can eat, need not perform hunger.

The initial six: 「鴻漸于干，小子厲，有言，無咎。」 The goose gradual at the shore; a young person, danger; there are words; no blame. Gan 干 is the water’s edge. Just beginning, a child will be in danger, there will be gossip: no blame. A new person, a new immigrant, a new industry’s first station: you stand on wet ground, feet not steady, people talking beside. Do not answer with “I must prove at once.” There are words: let them speak. You are still at the shore. Answering back makes no blame into blame.

Nine in the third: 「鴻漸于陸，夫征不復，婦孕不育，凶，利禦寇。」 The goose gradual on land; the husband campaigns and does not return; the wife is pregnant and does not rear; unfortunate; beneficial to resist robbers. Jump to land: the husband goes out and does not come back, pregnancy that cannot be reared: unfortunate. Beneficial for resisting robbers, not for this advance. In career this is skipping a station: the seat not yet padded, and you campaign far; a project not yet steady, and you expand a second; people not yet settled, and the house bears the consequence. Pregnant and not rearing: there is a start, no result that can be fed. Draw nine in the third: pull the far campaign back. Resist robbers first, keep the land you have. Do not invent the next station.

Six in the fourth: 「鴻漸于木，或得其桷，無咎。」 The goose gradual on a tree; perhaps obtaining a rafter; no blame. A goose’s web is not suited to grasping a tree. If it finds a flat rafter, still no blame. This is a makeshift station: the environment not quite right, finding a corner you can perch is not bad. Transferring to a not-quite-matching department, sojourning in a city that is not the end: both allowed. Do not treat a rafter as a height, and do not refuse to perch because it is not a height.

Nine in the fifth: 「鴻漸于陵，婦三歲不孕，終莫之勝，吉。」 The goose gradual on a height; the wife three years not pregnant; in the end nothing overcomes her; fortunate. Arrived at a high mound, three years not pregnant, and no one can overcome her: fortunate. This line most advises: a large place arrived, the result will be late. Three years is not only literary. In divination it is a true empty window. Promoted and temporarily no results, married and temporarily no child, immigrated and temporarily no recognition: all like not pregnant. In the end nothing overcomes her: do not fight the empty window. The empty window cannot beat a correct seat. Rush means to seek pregnancy, and you make fortune into restlessness.

Jian (Gradual) in love: a woman’s marriage is fortunate — fortune in walking ritual, not in speed

Ask about love and draw Jian (Gradual): as a whole it can succeed. A woman’s marriage is fortunate: the direction walks toward a shared life. It wants ritual, time, introductions, meeting parents, settling people in station by station. A flash marriage, hiding it from the family, using pregnancy to force a title: none of that matches Jian. Those look more like Gui Mei’s speech that moves.

If you are already together, Jian often appears when talking marriage, immigration, moving two lives up a station. Six in the second, eating and drinking at ease: being able to eat together, live a daily life — that matters more than vows. Nine in the fifth, three years not pregnant: this stretch will wait. While waiting there is gossip outside, comparison. In the end nothing overcomes her, then fortunate. Use “are we not working” to boil those three years, and you first cannot overcome yourself.

If you are single and draw Jian, the match looks more like a goose, coming by season, not by your notification. You can take initiative. Initiative is also going in one station: knowing, coming and going, putting speech correct — not pushing a person to the height in one go. The initial six, there are words, no blame: gossip beside will be there. Let it be there.

Upper nine: 「鴻漸于陸，其羽可用為儀，吉。」 The goose gradual on land; its feathers can be used for ceremony; fortunate. At the top, feathers can be ceremonial ornament: fortunate. Advance to the end, and the person becomes others’ pattern. In career: character and craft can be taken as a standard. In love: this relationship can bear being seen, not a way of perching that cannot see people. Jian’s good ending is not getting rich overnight. It is feathers usable for ceremony.

In class I use the goose’s station names for people to match

Shore, boulder, land, tree, height, then land whose feathers can be ceremony. I ask students where the feet are now. If they can write the station name, Jian was not wasted. If they cannot, people on nine in the third’s land play nine in the fifth’s height.

You cannot skip a station: not feudalism. A goose’s webs, wings, stamina: each station uses them differently. A new person using nine in the fifth’s scene will be pregnant and not rear. An old person still at the shore humiliating themselves is also the wrong station. Jian’s advance: advance obtaining a seat, then there is merit. The seat is the station, not a wish.

There is another skipping of stations, not in title, in mood. Feet still at the water’s edge, the heart already on the height. Geese do not fly that way. First finish this station’s food and drink; the next station will be willing to carry you. Draw Jian: aligning the station name is more useful than raising the wish.

A woman’s marriage is fortunate: I unpack it once more. Gui is having somewhere to return; fortune is returning by the correct way. Not “a woman must marry to be fortunate.” Ask about marriage, belonging, where a matter should land: this hexagram favors you walking the procedures through. A man asking about taking a post, taking citizenship, entering a teacher’s gate: also gui. Hear Jian as “women should obey and wait slowly,” and you have narrowed the Tuan. Advance through correctness, you can correct a state: the scale can be as large as a state, not only a wedding dress.

Jian’s reverse teaching is Gui Mei. Gui Mei also speaks of returning, and it is Thunder over Lake, Zhen above Dui, speech that moves, glad and then moving, the judgment to campaign unfortunate. Jian is stop then Xun: a mountain underneath, then you dare go in above. One is flying slowly. One is speech-moving into marriage. If I draw Jian, will this matter be so slow it dies?

It will be slow. Not necessarily die. Six in the second can already be eating. Nine in the fifth may need three years. Slow is process, not a death sentence. Use skipping stations to treat slow, and it easily dies. The death of pregnant and not rearing is often you yourself forcing ripeness.

Immigration, promotion, I drew Jian: the first year is unsmooth. What then?

First match the station. The initial six by nature has words, danger. The first year is like a water’s edge; wet feet are normal. Find craft as a boulder, and eating and drinking at ease will come. Fight nine in the fifth’s three years with “I already left, why am I not yet recognized,” and you spend the fortune. Resist robbers: what you guard against is this heart that wants to skip a station.

A woman’s marriage is fortunate: can a man drawing Jian use it?

He can. Gui is a matter landing in the correct seat. A man’s taking a post, citizenship, entering the other family’s clan, entering a craft: all gui. The Tuan speaks of a woman’s marriage as an image taken clearly — not locking the hexagram by gender. Divination follows the question.
