I Ching Huan Meaning: Hexagram 59 Explained
Huan 渙 is most easily heard as one sentence: it is over, we will scatter. Use it to interpret an online hexagram reading.

Huan 渙 is most easily heard as one sentence: it is over, we will scatter.
Scattering is this hexagram’s image, that is right. Wind traveling on water, ripples spreading. Huan is not only allowing you to be sad. Six in the fourth clearly writes 「渙其群,元吉」— disperse the clique; great fortune. Scatter a small circle, and instead great fortune. The same scattering: some is hearts collapsing; some is you taking a private party apart, opening a waterway. Draw Huan: first ask what is scattering, then decide whether to cry or move the hands.
The picture: Wind over Water, Xun above Kan. Water below, wind above. Wind blowing on the water’s face: ice loosens, water flows, a person’s clinging is also blown open. It is most often mixed with Jing 井. Jing is Water over Wind, Kan above Xun: water above, wind below, well water to be drawn up. Huan is wind above, water below. One is taking water. One is scattering water. Reverse above and below, and the topic entirely changes.
Some people also read it as Kan as Water, and only judge danger. Kan below: there is indeed danger, hiding, something accumulated underneath. Above there is Xun: wind can enter, blow, issue. Huan’s danger often must be loosened by issuing and opening a channel — not by more blocking.
Huan: after speaking, people scatter; after scattering, there must be a temple
The Xu Gua says: 「說而後散之,故受之以渙。渙者,離也。」 After joy, scatter, so Huan follows. Huan means departing. Before it is Dui 兌: joy, speech. Spoken, gladness finished, people scatter. A banquet ending, a partnership’s honeymoon ending, words said and each going home: this sequence. Li 離 is separating. Draw Huan: it may only be the season to scatter. Not necessarily who betrayed whom.
The Tuan says: 「渙,亨。剛來而不窮,柔得位乎外而上同。」 Huan: opening. The firm comes and is not exhausted; the yielding obtains a seat outside and is the same as those above. It can open. In scattering there is still a spine; the yielding outside can stand with those above. The judgment: 「亨。王假有廟。利涉大川。利貞。」 Opening. The king arrives at the temple. Beneficial to cross a great stream. Beneficial to persist. Jia 假 is arriving; the king comes to the temple. A temple is a common sacrifice, common ancestors, a common aim. People scattered: use something larger than a small circle to gather them back.
This is Huan’s most important technique. Not forbidding scatter. After scattering, do you have a temple. Scatter without a temple is collapse. Scatter with a temple is opening a channel, even reform.
The Xiang says: 「風行水上,渙。先王以享于帝立廟。」 Wind traveling on water, Huan. The former kings offered to the Lord and founded a temple. Wind on water, and the former kings thought of sacrificing to Heaven, founding a temple. Draw Huan, ask about a team, a clan, dissolving: I always ask, what do you jointly recognize now? Cannot say it: the temple is not there. Wind blows again, and it only scatters more.
Beneficial to cross a great stream. Huan is instead beneficial for crossing large water. Wind-wood on water: the image of riding wood. When blocked, you fear a great stream. Already scattering, already flowing: you can instead walk the large. This goes against students’ intuition, so it must be said clearly: Huan is not telling you to hide at home waiting for unity. It tells you to use flow to pass danger. The premise is still beneficial to persist: the direction must be correct.
Career must know how to dredge; wealth must know which sum should scatter
Ask about career and draw Huan: commonly an organization whose hearts are not together, messages traveling like ripples and distorting, small groups standing, an old partnership dissolving, policy to be pushed down and a middle layer stuck. You can scold scattering. The hexagram more wants you to do two things: scatter the small groups that should scatter, found the temple that should be founded.
Issuing a command, a notice, a public briefing: all very Huan. Nine in the fifth: 「渙汗其大號,渙王居,無咎。」 Disperse like sweat a great command; disperse the king’s dwelling; no blame. Like sweating, issue a great command; even the king’s dwelling can be dispersed (opened, not hoarded in the palace): no blame. Draw nine in the fifth: it suits a major statement, taking resources from a private mansion for public use. Hide and do not announce: sweat cannot come out, the illness cannot scatter.
Six in the fourth: 「渙其群,元吉。渙有丘,匪夷所思。」 Disperse the clique; great fortune. Dispersing, there is a mound; not what ordinary thought can think. Scatter a private group: great fortune. After scattering, a larger gathering like a mound appears, not what ordinary thinking can reach. In career: dissolving a small circle, breaking factions, taking interest out of a few people’s hands: short term it looks bad. The hexagram says great fortune. Not what ordinary thought can think: the result will be larger than you imagine. Draw six in the fourth: do not, because “everyone is used to these few of our own,” dare not scatter.
In wealth, Huan can be funds drawn, accounts spread, a partnership splitting books — and can be you actively spreading risk, clearing stuck goods. Nine in the second: 「渙奔其机,悔亡。」 Disperse, running to a bench; regret vanishes. Ji 机 is a table, something to lean on. Danger below: run toward a table you can lean on, then regret vanishes. Draw nine in the second: first find something you can lean on — cash, a steady platform, a partner still there. Do not stand on the water scolding the wind.
Upper nine: 「渙其血,去逖出,無咎。」 Disperse the blood; go far out; no blame. Scatter harm, blood-qi, leave far: no blame. In finance: stop the bleeding, exit the project that has been seeping blood, walk a little farther. Staying to fight is not persistence. It is leaving blood in the water.
The initial six: 「用拯馬壯,吉。」 Use a strong horse to rescue; fortunate. Scattering just begun: use a strong horse to save, fortunate. The earlier you save, the better. In career, seeing people begin to leave in heart: handle it the first week. More useful than a long post half a year later. The horse must be strong, the method forceful — not a sticker asking for unity.
Huan in love: some should gather; some groups should scatter by nature
Ask about love and draw Huan: the relationship is departing, thinning, each thinking each. Messages read and not replied, family each passing the year, two people with a sheet of wind-blown water in between. Do not automatically judge a breakup. Huan can also be: scatter a third person, a small group, damaging friends on both sides, and the feeling instead is great fortune.
If you are single and draw Huan, the match is in flow: an old group scattered, a new occasion appearing. It can also be you yourself coming out of an expired clinging. The king arrives at the temple: a single person can also found a temple. What life you want: first sacrifice it yourself. A person without a temple: whatever wind blows, they grab; grabbed, it scatters again.
If you are already together, the fear is making “disperse the clique” into “disperse the other person.” What you scatter is an obstacle, a group outsiders stuck in, small circles between you that cannot be spoken. Not scattering the other person. Six in the third: 「渙其躬,無悔。」 Disperse the self; no regret. First scatter your own clinging, your own private: no regret. In love this line is very practical: first scatter your own face, your own small account. More matching than first judging why the other is cold.
A clan drawing Huan: common in dividing a house, dividing property, each moving. Whether the temple is there decides whether this time is “divided and still recognizing one ancestor” or “divided into strangers.” Arrive at the temple: use a common sacrifice, common care, a common name, to gather people back a little. Without this layer, law can divide however clearly, and the heart will keep departing.
In class a few lines must be taught accurately
Initial six: 用拯馬壯,吉. At the start of scattering, rescue must be fast, the horse strong. Draw the initial six: at once do a forceful save — meet, move money to a safe place, find the key person back. Do not use a weak, slow, only-expressing-mood way to rescue.
Nine in the second: 渙奔其机,悔亡. Run toward a table you can lean on. Draw nine in the second: list the table you can still lean on, run to it. Regret comes from standing in the middle of the water not going.
Six in the third: 渙其躬,無悔. Scatter the self. No regret. Not telling you to extinguish yourself. First untie one person’s private, one person’s clinging. Draw six in the third: start scattering from your own layer, and team and relationship have room.
Six in the fourth: 渙其群,元吉。渙有丘,匪夷所思. One of the ruling lines. Scatter a private group: great fortune. After, a mound, a large gathering, not what ordinary thought can think. Draw six in the fourth: the nerve must suffice to take a small circle apart. After taking it apart, do not rush to form a new private group. That is not understanding the mound.
Nine in the fifth: 渙汗其大號,渙王居,無咎. In position. A great command issued like sweat; even the dwelling can be opened. Draw nine in the fifth: it suits going public, issuing a command, taking resources out of a private house. Sweat must come through. Half out, and the illness returns.
The upper nine’s going far out: take it as a close. Harm scattered, walk far, no blame. Need not keep explaining on the old battlefield.
In class I draw Huan as two arrows
One arrow outward: scatter. One arrow upward: temple.
Only outward: people collapse, money collapses, words collapse. Only shouting temple, not scattering what should scatter: the temple becomes a shell. Wind blows, and it still scatters. Both arrows are needed.
Ask about dissolving: look whether it is dispersing the clique or dispersing the blood. The former may should scatter. The latter is you already injured, should exit. Ask about opening a channel: wind traveling on water is by nature dredging. Process, pipes, communication, a drain: all on topic. Ask about issuing a command: nine in the fifth. The command must be large, like sweating — not only biting ears in a small group.
When a modern company most looks like Huan: reorganization, remote work, so many groups no one is working in the same temple. Then a hundred pep talks are useless. Found a true common aim, take apart the small groups truly intercepting flow: more useful than a meal together.
The next hexagram is Jie 節. Things cannot depart forever. After scattering there must be limitation, or it flows with no bank. I Ching Huan FAQ
If I draw Huan, must we dissolve, break up?
Not necessarily. It is a hexagram of the function of scattering. It can be dissolving, scattering an obstacle, hearts already departing and needing a temple to gather. If the question is “should we scatter,” the hexagram spreads the plus and minus of scattering. You still look at the line. Six in the fourth’s scatter is fortunate. The upper nine’s scatter is stopping blood. The initial six can still rescue.
The king arrives at the temple: must I go worship?
You can take the image from sacrifice. The core is the matter jointly recognized. A company’s mission, a family’s public account, why two people are still together: all temples. Truly going to a temple to ask does not replace handling small circles and the aim. Only worship, mysteriously, and the wind is still blowing.
What is the difference between Huan and Jing?
Jing is Water over Wind, water above: repairing a well, taking water, not without gain. Huan is Wind over Water, wind above: scattering, dredging, founding a temple. One fears a dry well, well mud. One fears people collapsing, or should-scatter not scattering. For divination, first look whether wind is above or water is above.
A great command issued, and people still scatter. What then?
Look whether the command is sweat, or only steam. Sweat comes from inside, truly moving the king’s dwelling: resources and seats move with it. Only posting, seats and money not moving: that is not nine in the fifth. Also look whether there was six in the fourth’s step: the group that should scatter not scattered, and the command is eaten by a small group.
