I Ching Jia Ren Meaning: Hexagram 37
Jia Ren 家人, as the name says, asks about the people of the house and the matters of the house. Use it to interpret an online hexagram reading.

Jia Ren 家人, as the name says, asks about the people of the house and the matters of the house. Order the family, then govern the state, then bring peace to the world: the sequence cannot be reversed. If the house is not in order, a handsome career outside is a building without a beam.
Correct a place often written wrong: Jia Ren is not Huo Feng Ding 火風鼎. Ding is Fire over Wind, Li above Xun. Jia Ren is Wind over Fire, Xun above Li. Wind above, fire below. Wind fans the fire; the house has warmth, and it has rules. Get the picture wrong and the whole explanation that follows goes wrong with it.
Wind is the eldest daughter; fire is the middle daughter. Two feminine trigrams stacked is not “only women in the house.” It is that the inner atmosphere, the teaching by words, the daily order, matter extremely for the whole hexagram. The reverse is Kui 睽: two women living together, hearts not going one way. Jia Ren is harmony; Kui is division. Ask about family, and these two hexagrams often arrive as a pair.
Why Ming Yi is followed by Jia Ren
The Xu Gua says: 「傷於外者必反於家,故受之以家人。」 What is wounded outside must return home, so Jia Ren follows. Ming Yi 明夷 is dark outside, injury outside. After injury there must be a place that receives the person. That place is the house.
So drawing Jia Ren is not necessarily as sweet as “the family has been complete lately.” It may also be: you are not smooth outside, and the hexagram pulls your attention home. Light the lamp in the house first, then talk about the battlefield outside.
The Tuan says: 「家人,女正位乎內,男正位乎外,男女正,天地之大義也。」 The woman correct in position inside, the man correct in position outside; man and woman correct: the great righteousness of Heaven and Earth. Later ages made this rigid. The original sense is a clear division of labor. Someone inside holds the life up; someone outside gets the work done; both sides correct, and the house can stand. Today you need not lock “women only inside, men only outside.” What you ask is: in this house, is anyone actually in charge of both ends? Neither end managed, or one end crushing the other, is not correct position.
Drawing Jia Ren is not great fortune in all things — first treat the house as a matter
Old notes often write: a woman drawing Jia Ren is greatly fortunate. As encouragement, that can stand. As a verdict, it is too full. Jia Ren’s fortune sits on “the order of the house is still there.” If the house is already shouting, already living apart, already in court over money, drawing Jia Ren is more like a reminder to return to the proper work: do what is in your part, and say the rules that should be said.
Marriage and feeling
Jia Ren is a hexagram of making a home. Ask about marrying, moving in together, whether to meet the parents: the direction is affirmative. What it values is not romance. It is whether you can live a life. Dates can be very sweet. Jia Ren asks: who cooks, who stays up to care, who keeps the books, who appears when the child is ill.
A man drawing Jia Ren: a hard problem outside often has to find its answer at home. Wife, mother, sister, girlfriend may be this time’s helper. Not an order to dump the duty on her. An order not to look for methods only at the office. A woman drawing Jia Ren: her judgment and steering in the house will directly brighten the work outside. That is the practical layer under the old phrase “a capable wife prospers the husband”: once the house is steady, the outside can concentrate.
Career and wealth
Jia Ren is not a typical hexagram of opening a shop and exploding into profit. It looks more like a family business, a couple’s shop, work that can also run at home — or you must settle the house first, or the work will not move. The house is leaking and you go to talk a large project: the hexagram thinks you have the sequence wrong.
In wealth, Jia Ren leans toward “the house’s wealth”: a joint account, a home, family support, an opportunity that comes because of the family. Spending wildly in private, keeping an unclear relationship outside: both walk against this hexagram’s qi.
Moving, buying a home, returning to the hometown
These questions sit very well on Jia Ren. Wind and fire are warmth and circulation. What a house wants is that you can live in it and live through it. Draw Jia Ren, and moving, reunion, bringing parents over, settling the household registration: all are inside the topic.
What Jia Ren fears most: fake division of labor, real hands-off
Fake division of labor is saying who manages inside and who manages outside, while in fact no one manages, and when something happens you blame each other. Real hands-off is one side reading “correct position” as “I decide,” and the other not even having room to ask a question. The Tuan speaks of man and woman being correct: what is correct is the seat, not domination.
The first line: 「閑有家」— from the start the house has a fence, a rule. Wait until the children are grown and the debts are owed, then set rules, and the cost is much higher. This line is especially useful for the newly married, for people newly moved in together: how money is used, how chores are split, where the boundary with the family of origin sits. Saying it early is cheaper than shouting it late.
The middle lines speak of severity and leniency, words and deeds. Only severity, no leniency, and the house goes toward Kui. Only leniency, no severity, and it scatters. The upper line: 「有孚威如」— there is sincerity, and something like dignity. Dignity is not shouting. It is doing it yourself first, so the family can trust. Draw Jia Ren while the house is shouting, and I often advise not “you yield to him,” but “finish your own item first.” Once what is in your part stands, the qi is more correct.
Using Jia Ren today, without turning it into an old moral slogan
In a modern family both people often work. Jia Ren is not outdated. It only asks the question more precisely: does this house still have an inner order both of you recognize?
You can have no one home full-time. You cannot have no one keeping the books, the children’s schedule, the elders’ appointments. You need not use the old male-female split. You cannot have no split. Draw Jia Ren, write down the matters in the house that are drifting, and claim them item by item. That is much more useful than discussing “what a traditional woman should be.”
If you ask about a broader virtue of carrying, read Kun 坤. If you ask about dropping the posture so the house can live, read Qian (Modesty) 謙. Jia Ren is the hexagram that pulls the range back under this eaves.

I Ching Jia Ren FAQ
Is Jia Ren only for women?
No. A man asking about the house, a wife, whether to return to the family, draws this hexagram just as often. Old notes do emphasize a woman’s relation to “the inner.” Divination follows the question. It does not cut by gender with one knife.
If I draw Jia Ren, should I resign and go home?
Unless that is the question, do not jump automatically to resigning. Jia Ren often only says: first patch the home end. The method of patching can be going home, or renegotiating hours, boundaries, and chores. Resigning is the largest cut. The hexagram does not tell you to swing it on the first move.
Jia Ren and Kui appearing together: how do I read it?
Original Jia Ren, resulting Kui: the house’s harmony is walking toward division. Check which item of labor, or which sentence, split the heart. Original Kui, resulting Jia Ren: from not matching toward gathering in. Worth talking. Worth giving a common aim.
Why is the picture so easily mixed with Ding?
Because both are Xun and Li, only reversed above and below. Ding is cooking with fire, founding anew with a vessel. Jia Ren is wind coming out of fire, teaching by words from inside outward. One leans toward career and founding. One leans toward the house and order. For divination, get above and below right first.
