I Ching Ming Yi Meaning: Hexagram 36

Draw Ming Yi 明夷 and the room often goes quiet for half a second. Not to paint darkness. The picture is very straight: light has been buried.

Ming Yi is Earth over Fire, Kun above Li. Earth above, fire below. The sun has dropped under the ground: 「明入地中」— light entering the earth. People read it as Jin 晉, Fire over Earth: light coming out over the ground, ascent. Ming Yi is the reverse: injury, yi 夷. Flip above and below, and one tells you to appear, one tells you to hide. The full name must be said: Di Huo Ming Yi (地火明夷).

Yi means injury. The light is still there. It has been wounded and has gone into the soil. Not that there will never be a sun. For this stretch, brightness cannot hang on the face.

Ming Yi: advance must bring injury; after injury, go home

The Xu Gua says: 「進必有所傷，故受之以明夷。夷者，傷也。」 Advance must bring some injury, so Ming Yi follows. Yi means injury. Before it is Jin. You advanced, you will be hurt. After rising, after being received, after the light has shown, the next hexagram is Ming Yi. For divination this is practical. What follows doing well is not punishment. It is a reminder: light will enter the earth. Learn to hide first.

The Xu Gua has another sentence that must be read with it: 「傷於外者必反於家，故受之以家人。」 What is wounded outside must return home, so Jia Ren 家人 follows. If there is no home, the wound has nowhere to rest. So when I draw Ming Yi I almost always teach Jia Ren with it. This stretch you hide the light — hide it where? Under the eaves, where inner civilization is still there and outer yielding is still there. If the home is also shouting, also in Kui 睽, Ming Yi injures with no way back.

The Tuan says: 「明入地中，明夷。內文明而外柔順，以蒙大難，文王以之。利艱貞，晦其明也。內難而能正其志，箕子以之。」 Light enters the earth, Ming Yi. Inner civilization, outer yielding, to cover a great difficulty: King Wen used it. Beneficial to persist through hardship: darken the brightness. Inner difficulty, and still able to keep the will correct: Jizi used it. Inside, Li remains: civilization. Outside, Kun: yielding. Use darkness and still be bright. Beneficial to persist through hardship. Hardship is difficulty; persistence is staying correct. If you can stay correct inside difficulty, this hexagram can be passed. King Wen and Jizi are this hexagram’s shadows: one keeping the will in a great difficulty, one pretending dullness to hide the light.

The judgment is three characters: 「利艱貞」. No “opening.” No “taking a wife is fortunate.” Draw Ming Yi and first change the hope from “this time I will shine” to “this time I will endure correctly.”

Career and wealth: seek hiding first, brightness second

Ask about career and draw Ming Yi: as a whole, do not go high-profile, do not fight for credit, do not duel in the open. A cold market, a confused superior, an environment that will not let you finish a sentence: everyday faces of light entering the earth. The strategy is inner civilization and outer yielding: inside, keep the skill, the files, the judgment; outside, argue less, expose less, refuse to be the brightest person in the room.

This is not an order to abandon the craft. Use darkness and still be bright: what you darken is the way of showing, not the light itself. A product can be polished; an article can be finished and not published; people can be seen, words can be few. Ming Yi’s most expensive tuition is “I insist on proving I am right at this moment.” Right, and you will still be injured first.

In wealth, Ming Yi is not bankruptcy by necessity. In this stretch receipts are slow, titles are unclear, what you should receive is delayed, deducted, unseen. Large, high-visibility investments, standing on a stage, lending a name: mostly a red light. Hard persistence in wealth means guarding principal, keeping papers, not gambling against a confused field. Jizi lived to a later day not by winning the money back on the spot.

Initial nine: 明夷于飛，垂其翼。君子于行，三日不食. Ming Yi in flight; the wings hang down. The superior person on the road, three days without eating. To fly, first hang the wings. To go, you may go three days without food. Draw the first line and leaving is best — low, and bitter. Do not spread the wings for people to see. A post, a moment of fame, this meal: decline if you can. Hanging the wings is not surrender. It lets the arrow hit empty air first.

Six in the second: 明夷，夷于左股，用拯馬壯，吉. Ming Yi, injured in the left thigh. Use a strong horse to rescue; fortunate. Movement is impaired. Draw this line and the matter has already injured the power to act: body, transport, helpers. Do not walk hard. Find the able person, the able tool, to carry you out. Brace yourself and the thigh injures further.

Nine in the third: 明夷于南狩，得其大首. Ming Yi on a southern hunt; capturing the great leader. One of the few lines in Ming Yi that can strike, and it is still a hunt, not an argument in court. Draw nine in the third and you may deal with the key culprit, find the head of the problem — by the method of a hunt: prepared, directed, not calling out in public.

Six in the fifth: 箕子之明夷，利貞. Jizi’s Ming Yi. Beneficial to persist. Jizi, at the end of Yin, pretended dullness, suffered insult, hid the light, and later left the laws. Draw six in the fifth and you almost have the hexagram’s teaching itself: you may understand; do not perform understanding now. Pretend dullness to keep the body. That is not true dullness. True dullness puts the light out. Jizi’s light is still there; outside, it cannot be seen. Beneficial to persist: correctness is kept inside.

Upper six: 不明晦。初登于天，後入于地. Not bright, only dark. First climbing to Heaven, later entering the earth. Draw the upper line and beware: this is the kind of ending Jin walks into — bright first, buried after. If you ask about the other person or the environment, the upper six often points to someone who was once very bright and later very dark. If you ask about yourself, it is a warning: you have already climbed to Heaven; to shine still inside Ming Yi is to enter the earth. Not eternal darkness. For this stretch, stop the play of climbing to Heaven.

Ming Yi in love: light cannot hang on the face

Ask about love and draw Ming Yi: there is injury in the bond, something that cannot be said in the open, outside pressure pushing the two of you under the ground. Not necessarily a breakup. Now is not the time for a public show, or to force a declaration everyone can see. Use darkness. If inner civilization is still there, there is still a way to save it. If the inside is also black, Ming Yi walks toward the reverse of Jia Ren.

If you are single and draw Ming Yi, this peach blossom should not shine. There may be a person; the occasion is wrong, or you yourself are coming back from an outside wound. Go home first, recover first. Do not use a new brightness to cover an old wound. It will not cover.

If you are already together, Ming Yi is common when: the family opposes, outside gossip, one side’s career is hurt and the qi is brought home. Hang the wings: drop the high posture. Three days without eating: this stretch can be a little bitter, a little less enjoyment, get the person out first. Six in the second’s injured thigh may be real difficulty of movement, a real need to be carried. A partner then most resembles the rescue horse. A strong horse: fortunate. If the horse is not strong, both people will be buried together.

A third party, or a bond that cannot see the light, also often draws Ming Yi. The light should not have been hung out in the first place. The hexagram does not encourage secret love. It tells you this brightness is already being injured. Hard persistence — persist in what? In whether you are still correct. If not correct, hiding only buries the wound deeper. If correct, hiding is to get through this stretch of dark.

If you are married and ask Ming Yi, always link Jia Ren. Wounded outside, go home. The lamp in the house must be lit: who cooks, who listens, who treats the wound as a wound and not as a handle. If the home uses Ming Yi as a courtroom, the person is injured a second time. The Tuan says inner civilization and outer yielding. The home may be bright; outside must be yielding. Turn the home into a battlefield, and Kui follows.

In class, hiding the light is not being mute forever

Students most easily hear Ming Yi as: these eight years are over. No. Light enters the earth; the earth turns, and light will come out again. The next lesson is Jia Ren; after that, Kui. What this stretch asks is hard persistence, not a career change into being a dark person.

I have students divide three layers. First, is the light still there? If you can still see the matter clearly, Li is still below. Second, how yielding must the outside be? Yielding enough not to argue, not to expose, not to deliver the right words into the wrong ears. Third, can the home hold it? If it can, the wound has a place to rest. If it cannot, first patch Jia Ren, then talk about the hunt outside.

Jizi’s line is the hardest to teach. Pretending dullness feels like shame to modern people. In Ming Yi’s environment, exposing cleverness is raising the wings for the bow. You may stay clear in a diary, with a few people who can be trusted. You need not light up confused people in a meeting. Lighting them up is not your job. Living through this stretch is.

Not eternal darkness: this stretch, hide the light. In Jin, make bright virtue shine. In Ming Yi, darken the brightness. The same lamp, opposite use. Get the place right, and the lamp will not burn itself.

If I draw Ming Yi, is this matter over, this person over?

It is injury, it is darkening — not a coffin lid. The first line can still go. Six in the second still has a horse. Six in the fifth can still persist. The upper six is closer to light already in the earth. Treat the whole hexagram as a death sentence and you will delay the wings that should hang and the horse you should find.

During Ming Yi, can I resign, break up, speak the truth in public?

You can go. The way of going should look like hanging wings, not like smashing the lamp in public. If resigning or breaking up is to stay alive, to leave a field that injures, the first line allows walking. Speaking the full truth in public is mostly not this hexagram’s time. Jizi did not finish his speech in court. If you must hunt, look at nine in the third, and aim at the great leader, not at everyone.

Why must Jia Ren always be linked?

Because the Xu Gua wrote it: what is wounded outside must return home. Ming Yi does not tell you to endure alone under the ground. Home is where civilization can still be held. If the home does not take it, the wound becomes Kui. Draw Ming Yi and still not go home, still not treat what is under the eaves as a matter: the hexagram has only been walked halfway.

You advanced; injury has come. What should have been received has been received. After that, hard persistence. You need not void Jin. Hold the name you should hold, then gather the light into the earth. Like a forecast of cloud: the brightness of daytime is still yours. Just do not do noon’s work at night.
