I Ching Sheng Meaning: Hexagram 46 Explained

Cui 萃 is gathering. Gathered, things go up. Going up is Sheng 升. Students drawing Sheng easily hear promotion, a flying dragon. Too early. Sheng is not suddenly being lit. It is a tree in the earth, growing up with the time. Slow, and it must be correct.

The picture is Earth over Wind, Kun above Xun. Earth above; wind below — wood, entering. Wind in the earth, wood drilling out of the soil: wood born in the earth. Many people write it as Guan 觀, Wind over Earth. Guan is Xun above Kun: wind over the earth, contemplating, being seen. Reverse above and below and when you should accumulate you go to talk exposure: the root is not deep, and you first ask people to look.

Jin 晉 is light coming out over the earth, the sun rising to ground level, more public. Sheng is the yielding rising with the time, more accumulation. Both go up; the temper differs. If the question is being seen, being cited, Jin is nearer. If the question is growing step by step, being permitted to rise, Sheng is nearer. This article only finishes Sheng.

Sheng: what gathers and goes up is called Sheng

The Xu Gua says: 「聚而上者謂之升，故受之以升。」 What gathers and goes up is called Sheng, so Sheng follows. People gathered, resources gathered: the next stretch is walking up. Sheng without Cui is sometimes empty rising: no crowd below, and you are still climbing. Draw Sheng and first ask: has the layer under you gathered? If not, go back and gather. If it has, then rise.

The Tuan says: 「柔以時升。巽而順，剛中而應，是以大亨。」 The yielding rises with the time. Xun and yielding; the firm in the center and answering: therefore great opening. The yielding rising with the time: four characters are the hexagram’s key. Yielding is not soft to the point of no bone. It is not forcing through. With the time: not rising whenever you feel like it. Rising is truly going up, not turning in place.

The judgment: 「元亨。用見大人，勿恤。南征吉。」 Great opening. Use seeing a great person; do not worry. A southern campaign is fortunate. South in the later heaven is brightness, the side that opens forward. Sheng’s southwest and northeast are not as dangerous as Jian 蹇. It gives you a positive: go see the person who can promote and recognize you, walk toward the light, need not fear that you are still small.

The Xiang says: 「地中生木，升。君子以順德，積小以高大。」 Wood born in the earth, Sheng. The superior person follows virtue, accumulating the small into the high and great. I copy this almost every time. What Sheng hates most is looking down on the small. Look down on the small, and there is no high and great to reach.

Career and wealth: rising because you are permitted, not because you crown yourself

Ask about career and draw Sheng: as a whole you can go up. Promotion, upgrade, bringing a product from underground to the surface, opening a base outward: all on topic. The initial six: 「允升，大吉。」 Allowed to rise; great fortune. Yun 允 is being recognized, permitted. Not announcing I have risen. A lower place can be greatly fortunate because someone allows. Draw the initial six: go find the great person who can allow you. More useful than writing a manifesto at home.

Six in the fifth: 「貞吉，升階。」 Persistence fortunate; rising by steps. The step is a stair. Ask “can I jump three grades at once”: six in the fifth says rising by steps. You can go up, and you must step. Stepped solid, then persistence is fortunate. Jumping grades looks more like Jin’s hurry, or Qian’s arrogance — not this hexagram’s gait.

Nine in the third: 「升虛邑。」 Rising into an empty town. You can enter; inside it is empty. Common in career: the seat is given, people are not there, resources are not there, the name is there and the substance is not. Draw nine in the third: you can go up, and once up you must fill the town yourself. Do not think entering an empty town is success. An empty town is not a trap you cannot enter. It reminds you: the town is empty. Do not celebrate too early.

In wealth, Sheng looks like a tree growing: receipts add layer by layer, not a night of windfall. Accumulate the small into the high and great: it suits deposits, thickening small clients, using time to exchange for scale. A southern campaign is fortunate: you can develop outward, and it is still a campaign, not a gamble. Use seeing a great person, do not worry: patrons, a bank, someone who can stamp — go see them now, need not fear you are not yet qualified. Fear, and you cannot rise.

Six in the fourth: 「王用亨于岐山，吉，無咎。」 The king offers at Mount Qi; fortunate, no blame. Rising near the ruler, near brightness: use ritual, public reverence, to make this rise sit real. In career: having risen, give thanks, announce at the temple, finish the title. Do not privately feel you ought to hold it. Mount Qi is where the Zhou people began: a founding flavor, and still a sacrifice, not a shout.

Sheng in love: the relationship can go up, still one step at a time

Ask about love and draw Sheng: the relationship has qi of walking up. It suits meeting parents, raising ambiguity into certainty, moving two lives toward a common height. Not a lightning marriage. The yielding rises with the time: if the time has not arrived, forcing a rise is pulling a sapling taller.

If you are single and draw Sheng, often your state in this stretch is growing: work, name, stability. People will come close because of it. Allowed to rise: the other person or the elders allow you in the door. You feel good enough, the other has not yet allowed: that is still your Sheng, not this relationship’s Sheng. Go see a great person, do not worry: meeting the parents, Sheng does not oppose. It even encourages.

If you are already together, rising by steps is making the relationship real one step at a time: from hidden to visible, from visible to the house, from the house to lasting. Each step is small; stacked, they are high. Six in the second: 「孚乃利用禴，無咎。」 Sincerity, then a thin sacrifice is useful; no blame. In love you need not use a large scene to prove you have risen. Sincerity arrived, a home meal is enough.

Upper six: 「冥升，利于不息之貞。」 Dark rising; beneficial to unceasing persistence. Still rising in the dark. Beneficial, on the condition of unceasing correctness. Ming 冥 is dark, hard to see. The person has already risen high, the outside cannot quite see, and the self is still climbing. Persist in what is correct: accumulating virtue. Do not persist in what is correct: blindness. Dark rising in love: still wanting higher, more bound, more making the other person into your achievement. Unceasing persistence: the point is persistence, not unceasing taking.

The lines of Sheng: fortune in being allowed, in steps; danger in empty, in dark

Initial six: 允升，大吉. Rising because allowed. Go seek permission, go see a great person. Crowning yourself is not yun.

Nine in the second: 孚乃利用禴，無咎. Sincerity larger than the scene. Mid-Sheng, thin and true is safer than a fake great ritual.

Nine in the third: 升虛邑. You can go up; inside is empty. Treat empty as real, and you will fall later. Treat empty as a work list, and you can do.

Six in the fourth: 王用亨于岐山. Having risen, use ritual to make it sit. Public reverence beats private pride.

Six in the fifth: 貞吉，升階. One step at a time. Ask about jumping grades, overnight fame: six in the fifth will not cheer you on. It helps people who can walk it through.

The upper six as above. Dark rising, still rising in the dark: persist. Draw the upper six: check whether you cannot see you are already high enough, still using Sheng’s method on a place that should already be kept. Unceasing is virtue unceasing, not desire unceasing.

In class I most guard two kinds of fast in Sheng

One is the fast of seeking to be seen. The picture has not yet grown out of the ground, and you already seek Guan, exposure, Jin’s light over the earth. The root shakes in wind; the earth has not held it.

One is dark fast. Already above, still adding in the dark, calling it drive. The upper six allows rising, on the condition of persistence. Unceasing that is not correct is climbing blind.

The yielding rises with the time. I have students look at a calendar, not at ambition. What small things can be accumulated this month? Who is the great person? What is the next step? If they can say it, Sheng is great opening. If they cannot, only “I want to go up”: that is a toe, not wood.

Accumulate the small into the high and great: small is not pitiful. A daily report, a monthly close, one client, one small thing that was allowed: all are growth rings. When the rings cannot be seen, the wood is actually growing. People hurry, seek Guan, seek brightness, and make Sheng into Jin. Jin has Jin’s use: light over the earth. If this time is Sheng, first finish what is in the soil.

In divination Sheng often appears when asking: promotion, advancing in study, taking a shop from an alley to the street, taking a skill from raw to ripe. Great opening: the large direction opens. Do not worry: when you go see a great person, do not scare yourself back first. A southern campaign is fortunate: walk toward the side that can open, can be bright. Ask about an exam and draw Sheng: more like accumulating until allowed, not a sudden lighting. That kind of brightness is nearer Jin.

If I draw Sheng, will I certainly be promoted?

The direction is growing upward. Not necessarily that letter of appointment. It may be ability rising, a base rising, a relationship rising. If the question is promotion itself, look again: is there a great person, are there steps. No permission, only you wanting to rise: the initial six’s great fortune has not yet come to you.

A southern campaign is fortunate: should I develop south, move house?

When the question is direction or relocation, you may read south. When the question is career strategy, south is toward the light, the side that can open — not that everyone must buy a house in the south. Align the question first, then the compass.

Is dark rising a bad line?

Not necessarily bad. What it fears is not persisting correctly. Working in the dark, accumulating in the dark: allowed. Inflating in the dark, taking in the dark: not beneficial. Beneficial to unceasing persistence: five characters must be read together. Do not read only Sheng.

Sheng, Qian, Jin: how do I choose which to use?

Qian is yourself firm, yourself flying. Jin is light over the earth, being seen. Sheng is the yielding with the time, accumulating the small into the high. Draw Sheng and use Qian’s fighting, and you drive a tree as if it were a dragon. Draw Sheng and only seek Jin’s brightness, and you will light the root to death. First recognize: this time you are wood, not the sun, and not yet a dragon.
