I Ching Xiao Guo Meaning: Hexagram 62

Xiao Guo 小過 is not as simple as a small fault, and still less “the sin is small, it does not matter.” Guo 過 is going beyond, slightly past the usual line. Xiao 小 is the yin, fine, lower end that may go a little beyond. Great matters, upward, flying high: this hexagram does not allow.

Recognize the hexagram first. Xiao Guo is Thunder over Mountain, Zhen above Gen. Mountain below — stopping; thunder above — movement. The Xu Gua says: 「有其信者必行之，故受之以小過。」 Those who have trust must act on it, so Xiao Guo follows. Before it is Zhong Fu 中孚. Trust there, it must be taken to act. Xiao Guo: small matters yes, great matters no; not fitting to go up, fitting to go down

The Tuan says: 「小過，小者過而亨也。過以利貞，與時行也。」 Xiao Guo: the small one goes beyond, and it opens. Going beyond, beneficial to persist, going with the time. In the small, a little beyond: instead it opens. Going beyond must be beneficial to what is correct, must go with the time. The yielding obtains the center: therefore small matters are fortunate. The firm loses its seat and is not centered: therefore great matters are not allowed. There is the image of a flying bird. A flying bird leaves its sound: not fitting to go up, fitting to go down, great fortune. Up is contrary; down is yielding.

The judgment almost says this again: 「亨。利貞。可小事，不可大事。飛鳥遺之音。不宜上，宜下。大吉。」 Opening. Beneficial to persist. Small matters allowed, great matters not. A flying bird leaves its sound. A flying bird leaves only sound. You heard it; the bird has already passed. Xiao Guo’s timing is like that: what you can do is this small stretch now, not flying high to chase a whole view. Fitting to go down: a little more modest, concrete, near the ground. Fitting to go up: wanting higher, brighter, more seen: contrary. The upper six is flying until leaving: unfortunate, called disaster and fault.

The Xiang says: 「山上有雷，小過。君子以行過乎恭，喪過乎哀，用過乎儉。」 Thunder on a mountain, Xiao Guo. The superior person in conduct goes beyond in respect, in mourning goes beyond in grief, in use goes beyond in thrift. Three “going beyond”: all toward down, gathering in, the fine. None is going beyond in strength, luxury, arrogance. That is Xiao Guo’s way of going beyond.

Career: do the small, the below; wealth: do not fly

Ask about career and draw Xiao Guo: the whole strategy is do the small matters that can be done a little more, take the great matter you want to do apart. Going beyond in respect: toward clients, details, ritual, you can be more thorough than peers. Going beyond in thrift: lock costs first. Going public, merging, fighting a leader: not on this hexagram’s flight.

Six in the second: 「過其祖，遇其妣；不及其君，遇其臣。無咎。」 Passing the grandfather, meeting the grandmother; not reaching the ruler, meeting the minister. No blame. Going past the grandfather, meeting the grandmother; not meeting the ruler, meeting the minister. A generation short going up, a grade short: instead no blame. In career: need not reach the largest person directly. First meet the layer you can meet. Reporting across grades, going straight to the largest name, skipping the middle: looks brave. Xiao Guo does not like it. Meeting the minister: treat the middle layer, the people who actually do the work, well, and the matter can succeed.

Nine in the third: 「弗過防之，從或戕之，凶。」 Not going beyond to guard; following, perhaps injured; unfortunate. Yang at the top of the lower trigram, firm. You should go a little beyond to guard; you do not; people who follow will harm you. Guarding in small matters is a necessary going-beyond. Draw nine in the third: do protection a little over: backup, one more sentence in a contract, block a petty person’s road first. Not going beyond: you will be injured. This line shows Xiao Guo is not telling you never to go beyond. The direction of going beyond must be right. Guarding: you may go beyond. Flying: you may not.

Nine in the fourth: 「無咎。弗過遇之。往厲必戒。勿用永貞。」 No blame. Not going beyond, you meet. Going, danger; you must be warned. Do not use lasting persistence. Yang not in position. Not going too far, then you can meet. Going further is dangerous: be warned. Do not write this expedient into a ten-year plan as the eternal correct way. Draw nine in the fourth: you can meet, handle what is in front. Do not write an expedient measure into a decade.

Six in the fifth: 「密雲不雨，自我西郊。公弋取彼在穴。」 Dense clouds, no rain, from our western suburbs. The duke shoots with a corded arrow, taking what is in a cave. Clouds dense, rain does not fall, coming from the western suburbs. A duke uses a corded arrow to shoot what is in a hole. The high does not rain: go take what is in a cave. In career: the large climate does not form (no rain); go take concrete results hidden in a hole — a small client, a case already in hand, the one you can shoot accurately. Do not stand in the suburbs waiting for a great rain.

In wealth, Xiao Guo suits small sums, thrift, taking out money already in a hole to use. It does not suit adding leverage to chase highs. A flying bird, unfortunate: the initial six already wrote it. Xiao Guo in love: small matters can go beyond; a title as a great matter, do not force a flight

Ask about love and draw Xiao Guo: it suits a little more in small matters — more consideration, more grieving the other person’s grief, more gathering temper downward. One kind hears Xiao Guo as you may go beyond, then goes beyond in great matters. This kind should read “great matters not allowed,” “not fitting to go up.” A flying bird leaves its sound: it sounds beautiful. It is a warning: you have only sound left.

Contrast Da Guo: Da Guo is yang gone beyond, a ridgepole bent: you must brace, stand alone without fear. Xiao Guo is yin a little beyond: go down, be respectful, grieve, thrifty. The two “going beyond” have opposite prescriptions. Zhong Fu is trust; Xiao Guo is acting. Feng is abundance, fitting to be at noon; Xiao Guo is flying high, unfortunate. In abundance it is easiest to make a small matter into a great one, and easiest to step from Feng’s house into Xiao Guo’s leaving.
