I Ching Ji Ji Meaning: Hexagram 63 Explained

Ji Ji 既濟 is the hexagram among the sixty-four that looks most orderly. Apply the lines to love, career, and decisions. Learn the key context before applying it.

Ji Ji 既濟 is the hexagram among the sixty-four that looks most orderly. All six lines, yin and yang, in position: odd places yang, even places yin, not one wrong. Water over fire: a pot already on the stove, water boiling, you can cook, can cross. The matter is complete.

In class I then always write the reverse: Wei Ji 未濟 is fire over water, Li above Kan: fire above, water below, cannot cook, crossing not finished. Ji Ji is Kan above Li: water above, fire below. This pair is the easiest to write backward. Write it backward, and you advise “the matter is complete, guard” as “not yet complete, keep charging,” or the reverse. The first second of recognizing the hexagram, look at one thing only: is water above, or fire above. Water above: Ji Ji. Fire above: Wei Ji.

Orderly, in position, already complete: so students love to hear great fortune. The judgment itself throws cold water: 「亨小,利貞。初吉終亂。」 Opening in the small. Beneficial to persist. Fortunate at first, disorder at the end. Opening is the small end. The start fortunate, the ending disordered. Perfect is temporary. Draw Ji Ji: not an order to set off fireworks. An order to begin holding. Success is the start of holding, not a life’s full stop.

Ji Ji: those who have gone beyond must complete — completed, still persist

The Xu Gua says: 「有過物者必濟,故受之以既濟。」 Those who have gone beyond things must complete, so Ji Ji follows. Before it is Xiao Guo 小過. Gone beyond, then you can complete, the matter can be done. So Ji Ji is not completion dropped from Heaven. It is after that stretch of going beyond, that acting, you crossed. Draw Ji Ji: often the matter you asked is already complete, about to complete, structurally already right. How to live after it is complete: that is the topic.

The Tuan says: 「既濟,亨,小者亨也。利貞,剛柔正而位當也。初吉,柔得中也。終止則亂,其道窮也。」 Ji Ji: opening, the small one opens. Beneficial to persist: the firm and yielding correct, seats fitting. Fortunate at first: the yielding obtains the center. Stop at the end, then disorder: the way is exhausted. Firm and yielding both correct, both in position: therefore beneficial to persist. Fortunate at first, because six in the second, the yielding, obtains the center. Stop at the end, then disorder: walked to the top, the road exhausted. Water and fire exchanging, you can complete a matter. Stay forever in “already complete,” and disorder grows from inside.

The judgment 「亨小」 many people read as “small opening.” The sense is close: it can open, and what opens is holding what is complete, details, the small places already on track. Not opening another large one. Beneficial to persist: complete, still correct, still with measure. Ji Ji without persistence is preparation for disorder at the end.

The Xiang says: 「水在火上,既濟。君子以思患而預防之。」 Water over fire, Ji Ji. The superior person thinks of trouble and prevents it. Water over fire: what do you fear most? Fire too fierce boiling the water dry, or water too much putting the fire out. So think of trouble, prevent. This hexagram’s image text is much more honest than the name. Draw Ji Ji: the first homework is not a celebration list. It is a prevention list.

Career complete: leave a brake; wealth open: watch fire

Ask about career and draw Ji Ji: the matter is mostly already in position — a project delivered, a seat sat, a system running, an exam passed. You can take a bow one night. From the next day, treat it as Ji Ji, not as forever. Fortunate at first, disorder at the end: written in the judgment, not me alarming you.

The initial nine: 「曳其輪,濡其尾,無咎。」 Drag the wheel; wet the tail; no blame. Hold the wheels back a little, the tail in water. Like a fox crossing a river: the tail wet, speed slows. No blame. This is Ji Ji’s opening move: leave a brake. In career: just finished, and at once opening a larger next: the wheels will fly. Drag the wheel: pull the rhythm. Wet the tail: admit you are already in the water, be careful of the back end. The back end is papers, maintenance, a last payment not yet collected, a team’s fatigue.

Six in the fourth: 「繻有衣袽,終日戒。」 Fine silk, with rags ready; all day on guard. Handsome clothes, rags kept ready. All day on guard. A boat will leak: have cloth to plug a seam. Draw six in the fourth: backup, a spare, a fallback: not spoiling the mood. Ji Ji’s daily life. All day on guard is not all day afraid. After success, still treat checking as homework.

Nine in the third: 「高宗伐鬼方,三年克之。小人勿用。」 Gao Zong attacking the Demon Region, three years to overcome it. Do not use small people. Yin Gao Zong fought the Demon Region, three years before overcoming. Do not use small people. Already complete, and there may still be a long closing war. Able to overcome: because in position, because lasting. Use small people to close, and you make fortunate-at-first into disorder-at-the-end early. In career, after success, rewarding merit: most avoid handing a key seat to someone who only shouts.

Nine in the fifth: 「東鄰殺牛,不如西鄰之禴祭,實受其福。」 The eastern neighbor kills an ox; not as good as the western neighbor’s thin sacrifice, truly receiving the blessing. East kills an ox, a great sacrifice; west uses a thin yue 禴 sacrifice, and truly receives blessing. After Ji Ji, display is not as good as sincerity. In wealth: a great banquet, a great buy, a great donation for face, not as good as the small, true, continuous. When books look well, it is easiest to be the eastern neighbor. The hexagram chooses the western.

Upper six: 「濡其首,厲。」 Wetting the head; dangerous. The head soaked. Crossing a river, crossed too far, water to the crown. Dangerous. In career: already complete, and still adding one more stroke, one more round, stretching success into a myth. The head already wet, and you still say you are completing. This line and Qian’s arrogant dragon, Feng’s upper six, are the same weather: too far.

Wealth as a whole: Ji Ji can have completion, receipts, a closing payment. Drag the wheel. Do not turn receipts at once into larger leverage. All day on guard: watch cash, contracts due, who at this time comes near wanting to be a small person. Fortunate-at-first wealth, held, is wealth. Cannot hold it: fuel for disorder at the end.

Ji Ji in love: complete, and then it easily disorders

Ask about love and draw Ji Ji: the relationship is often already complete — together, engaged, married, reconciled, a title there. Yin and yang in position, looking very matched. Matched, and fortunate at first, disorder at the end still holds. A honeymoon is fortunate at first. Disorder at the end grows from the day you thought you need not work anymore.

If you are single and draw Ji Ji, “not yet begun” is rarer. More like this stretch already has a result, or will complete soon. Complete, and do not at once stuff all the future in. Drag the wheel, wet the tail: give each other a wet-tail speed. You can cross. Do not swim until you have no crown.

If you are already together, six in the second: 「婦喪其茀,勿逐,七日得。」 The woman loses her screen; do not chase; in seven days you obtain it. Fu 茀 is a carriage curtain, a screen, a woman’s ornament for going out. Lost: do not chase; in seven days it returns. In love, a Ji Ji stage will lose some dignity, some habitual covering, and two people begin to see daily life. Do not chase hard after that lost cloth. Some things return in a week. You chase, and you make a small loss into large disorder.

All day on guard, in love, is not surveillance. A successful relationship still must be maintained: finish speaking, live the day through, treat outsiders’ killing an ox (lavish comparison) as an eastern neighbor you need not learn. The western neighbor’s thin sacrifice: simple and true can receive blessing more than a grand ritual. A wedding very Feng, daily no one: Feng’s upper six. Ji Ji’s upper six is putting the head in, too far. Two kinds of too far, both common in love.

These lines: success and failure differ in “whether you went too far”

Initial nine: 曳其輪,濡其尾,無咎. Leave a brake. The tail may be wet; the head may not. Draw the initial nine: pull speed. No blame comes from half a beat slow, not from accelerating again.

Six in the second: 婦喪其茀,勿逐,七日得. Lost a screen: do not chase. The yielding obtains the center: therefore fortunate at first. Draw six in the second: the missing piece, endure a week, finish the proper work. Chase the small, and you disorder what is already complete.

Nine in the third: 高宗伐鬼方,三年克之。小人勿用. A large close takes long; using people must be careful. Draw nine in the third: accept three years to overcome. Do not fantasize a ninety-day close. When rewarding merit, take small people off key seats.

Six in the fourth: 繻有衣袽,終日戒. However handsome the completion, keep a patch ready. Draw six in the fourth: check, back up, list leaks. All day on guard is a profession, not an anxiety disorder.

Nine in the fifth: 東鄰殺牛,不如西鄰之禴祭,實受其福. Blessing in position comes from thin and sincere, not from thick and boastful. Draw nine in the fifth: shrink the celebration, do the real layer well. Killing an ox is lively. Blessing may not come.

Upper six: 濡其首,厲. The head wet. Draw the upper six: stop. Lift the head out of the water. This is the scene of disorder at the end, not a horn to add more force.

In class I teach Ji Ji as “the hexagram after finishing”

Students asking success or failure love to hear completion. Ji Ji says: completion will disorder, unless you think of trouble and prevent. Tai 泰 also opens. Tai is Heaven and Earth exchanging, the road open, you can go in. Ji Ji is more orderly, and more reminds of disorder at the end. Opened, you can still walk. Complete, you must begin to hold. Both hexagrams fortunate; the use of fortune differs. Draw Tai and you can still push. Draw Ji Ji: pushing must be very careful. Drag the wheel first.

A prevention list I only want three items, and it can be used:

  1. The wheel: speed. The first month after completion, do not add a new large battlefield.
  2. Rags: backup. Papers, cash, key people: have substitutes.
  3. The head: do not reach into the water further. Credit, scene, the next impossible aim: taste the upper six, and gather in.

Ji Ji’s next hexagram, and the reverse, is Wei Ji. Things cannot be exhausted. Completion is not an endpoint. Water and fire reversed again: again unfinished. The two hexagrams must be read against each other, and above and below must be seen right. I Ching Ji Ji FAQ

Is Ji Ji great fortune, meaning this matter has already succeeded?

Structurally it is already complete, in position, can succeed. Fortune is at the start; disorder at the end. Treat Ji Ji as a trophy, and disorder comes faster. It looks more like “the pot is already on the fire.” You still look at whether you can watch the fire, whether you will boil the soup dry.

How do I remember Ji Ji and Wei Ji so I do not write them backward?

Ji Ji: Kan above Li, Water over Fire: water above, fire below, water and fire exchanging, you can cook, can cross. Wei Ji: Li above Kan, Fire over Water: fire above, water below, not exchanging, not yet cooked. Remember “water over fire is called Ji Ji.” Do not rely on imagining who extinguishes whom. Remember also: Ji Ji, six lines in position; Wei Ji, six lines all not in position.

If I draw Ji Ji, can I still open a new project, still marry?

You can, as an extension of holding what is complete, not as a brand-new field campaign. Marrying looks a lot like Ji Ji: the title complete, after it days of all-day-on-guard. Opening a new project: first ask whether the old tail is still wet. The tail still in the water, and you stretch the head: the upper six. Treat the new as a small matter, as the western neighbor’s thin sacrifice: more able to receive blessing.

Fortunate at first, disorder at the end: is that fate, holding useless?

Not fate. The Tuan explains: stop at the end, then disorder; the way is exhausted. You treat completion as being able to stop effort: then exhausted. Think of trouble and prevent, drag the wheel, keep rags, do not use small people: disorder can come late, can be small. Guard nothing, and disorder will be on time. The hexagram gives a mechanism, not a spell.
