The Ten Gods are ten names for how the other stems and branches relate to the Day Master. First classify same as me, generates me, generated by me, controls me, and controlled by me; then divide each by Yin and Yang. Memorizing names without deriving the relationships leads to careless labels.

How to derive them

  1. The heavenly stem of the Day Pillar is the Day Master.
  2. Compare every other stem and each hidden stem with the Day Master by Five Element.
  3. Divide each type by polarity. For a Yang Day Master, the opposite polarity is “Direct” and the same polarity is “Indirect.” The same logic applies to Officer/Killings, Wealth, Seal, Output, and Friend/Rob Wealth.

For a Jia Wood Day Master: Jia is Friend and Yi is Rob Wealth; Gui is Direct Seal and Ren is Indirect Seal; Bing is Food God and Ding is Hurting Officer; Xin is Direct Officer and Geng is Seven Killings; Ji is Direct Wealth and Wu is Indirect Wealth. Apply the same Five Element and polarity logic to other Day Masters.

Convert every hidden stem into its heavenly-stem form before labeling it. After software labels the chart, check one or two pillars yourself.

What each Ten God means in a chart

Read each one together with Day Master strength, exposure, rooting, and its pillar.

Direct Officer: restraint, status, duty. If the Day Master can carry it, it often points to management or institutional work. If the Day Master is weak and Officer is heavy, pressure rises. In a woman's chart, Direct Officer is one indicator of the husband.

Seven Killings (Indirect Officer): competition and authority, sharper than Direct Officer. With Food God controlling it or Seal transforming it, it can show drive. Uncontrolled with a weak Day Master, it more easily brings conflict or legal trouble.

Direct Seal: learning and support; excessive Seal can mean dependence. Indirect Seal favors specialized or unusual study. Strong Seal taking away Food God can block expression and the route to wealth.

Friend and Rob Wealth: peers and independence, but also divided wealth. If Wealth is weak and Rob Wealth is exposed, money may enter and leave quickly. Officer protecting Wealth or Output bridging the flow changes the result.

Food God and Hurting Officer: output, expression, and skill. Food God is gentler; Hurting Officer is sharper. When Hurting Officer meets Officer, the classics call it “Hurting Officer sees Officer,” but whether it breaks the pattern depends on the whole chart's control and transformation.

Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth: what the Day Master controls. Direct Wealth favors stable income; Indirect Wealth favors opportunities and movement. In a man's chart, Wealth is one indicator of a spouse. Excessive Wealth with a weak Day Master means being burdened by money.

Read combinations first

Ask whether the Day Master can carry Wealth and Officer, whether Killings are controlled, and whether Seal harms Output. Only then add major and annual luck. “Food God controls Killings” and “Wealth generates Officer” describe combinations, not slogans to apply on sight.
