The Ten Gods - Meanings and Practical Use
On this page
The Ten Gods name the ten roles that describe how every other stem and branch in the four pillars relates to the Day Master: same as me, generates me, I generate, controls me, I control - then split by Yin-Yang to get ten labels. Once you can derive them, you can talk about character and life circumstances; otherwise you are only memorizing vocabulary.
How to derive them
- Set the Day Master: the day pillar's heavenly stem is the Day Master.
- Set the relation: for every other stem, and for hidden stems inside the branches, classify the Five-Element relation to the Day Master: same as me, generates me, I generate, controls me, I control.
- Split Yin-Yang: each of those five relations splits in two, and Yin-Yang pairing yields direct vs indirect.
Example with a Yang Day Master Jia: Jia meeting Jia is Friend; Yi is Rob Wealth; Gui is Direct Seal; Ren is Indirect Seal; Bing is Food God; Ding is Hurting Officer; Xin is Direct Officer; Geng is Seven Killings; Ji is Direct Wealth; Wu is Indirect Wealth.
In real chart work, hidden stems must be converted one by one. If software labels the Ten Gods for you, still spot-check a pillar or two by hand.
Short gloss on each Ten God
Direct Officer: discipline, status, duty; too strong turns stiff and pressurized. In career it points to institutions, management, and compliance. In women's charts it is often one line for the husband star, though clash and combination still matter.
Seven Killings: pressure, authority, competition; with control and transformation it becomes drive and execution, without control it becomes conflict. Food God controlling Killings or Seal transforming Killings is welcome.
Direct Seal: nurture, learning, shelter; too strong can lean dependent or lazy. Side Seal is more niche and analytical, and you must check whether "Seal snatching Food" really forms.
Friend / Rob Wealth: peers, sharing wealth, self-will. If wealth is weak and Rob Wealth appears on the stem, money tends to come and go; check whether Officer or Seven Killings protect Wealth.
Food God / Hurting Officer: talent, expression, output, wealth generation. Food God is milder; Hurting Officer is sharper. Do not just repeat formulas like "Hurting Officer sees Officer" unless the chart actually forms it.
Direct Wealth / Indirect Wealth: the wealth I control. Direct Wealth leans toward steady income; Indirect Wealth toward flow and opportunity. In men's charts Wealth may reflect one side of spouse connection, but never the whole story.
Generation, restriction, and transformation are the spine
Reading only the label of a Ten God invites stereotyping. In practice always ask: can the chart carry Wealth and Officer? Are Seven Killings controlled? Does Seal damage Food God or Hurting Officer? Only then do you layer major luck cycles and annual luck. Phrases like "Food God controls Seven Killings," "Wealth generates Officer," and "Seal protects the self" are combination language; check whether the stems and branches actually form the combination, not just whether the phrase sounds familiar.
