BaZi Ten God Relations: Generate, Control, Combination

The moment students hear Ten Gods, they want to memorize all ten names: Friend, Rob Wealth, Food God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer, Indirect Seal, Direct Seal. They can finish the list and still stall when they open a chart.

The stall is usually not the names. It is the relations. The Ten Gods are not ten labels sitting side by side. They are five kinds of force feeding, striking, and pulling one another. Feeding is generate. Striking is control. Pulling is combination. Once those three words land in class, the Ten Gods start to look like life, not an exam sheet.

The Ten Gods are read from the Day Master. The Day Master is “me.” What generates me is Seal. What is the same as me is Friend/Rob Wealth. What I generate is Output. What I control is Wealth. What controls me is Officer/Killings. Five groups in a circle: a resource map of a life.

First collapse BaZi Ten Gods into five groups: Seal, Friend, Output, Wealth, Officer

The Ten Gods come in pairs. Meanings sit close; the flavor is different. Beginners should treat them as five groups. Direct and Indirect can wait.

Seal: Direct Seal, Indirect Seal (梟神). Elders, study, diplomas, backing, faith, and the body’s nourishment. Direct Seal is upright and steady. Indirect Seal is sideways, mixed, full of ideas, and also good at swallowing your expression.

Friend/Rob Wealth: Friend, Rob Wealth. Yourself, siblings, friends, colleagues, competition, refusing to lose. Friend is flatter; Rob Wealth grabs more.

Output: Food God, Hurting Officer. Speech, craft, expression, children, appetite, dissent. Food God is even and can nourish. Hurting Officer is sharp and loves to pick.

Wealth: Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth. Money, resources, a wife (in a man’s chart), practical gain. Direct Wealth is steady; Indirect Wealth is lively and easier to spend outside.

Officer/Killings: Direct Officer, Seven Killings. Rank, systems, pressure, disputes; in a woman’s chart often the husband or a stable partner. Direct Officer has rules. Seven Killings arrives hard.

Learn the five groups, then Direct and Indirect. Mix Direct and Indirect and the verdict gets ugly. Mix the five groups and you do not even have a direction.

BaZi Ten Gods generate: who feeds whom, who is drained

Generate is feeding, and also draining. Seal generates the Day Master: the body is fed. The Day Master generates Output: the body is drained. One arrow, two different feelings at each end.

Four common generate lines:

1. Seal generates the Day Master. Someone teaches, someone covers you, there is a method. A weak Day Master needs this most. Too much Seal and a person stays in theory and will not enter the water. Essay: BaZi Seal Generates Day Master: Study and Support.

3. Wealth generates Officer. Money goes to feed status, rank, and duty. In a man’s chart, a wife helping the career is common. In a woman’s chart, ask whether she is spending herself to complete the other person. See BaZi Wealth Generates Officer: Money Into Status.
4. Officer/Killings generate Seal. Pressure produces backing. Killings generate Seal, Seal then feeds the Day Master: Killings generate Seal. A weak Day Master meeting Killings can often live if Seal is there. See BaZi Killings Generate Seal: Pressure Into Support.

One more line people forget: Friend/Rob Wealth generates Output. Your own people push you to speak and to make products together. It does not need its own essay, but remember it on a chart: when Friend/Rob Wealth is strong, Output comes out louder, and there are more companions to play with.

BaZi Ten Gods control: who strikes whom, and which layer hurts

Control is more direct than combination. In class I still insist: find control first, then look back at combination.

Five control lines, matching the five groups:

1. Officer/Killings control the Day Master. Pressure lands on me. Weak, with no rescue: Officer and Killings attack the Day Master. Strong enough to carry it: rank and duty. See BaZi Officer and Killings Attack the Day Master.

3. Output controls Officer/Killings. Talent goes to meet status. Food God controlling Killings is often real skill holding pressure. Hurting Officer seeing Officer is a fast mouth and a high bar; marriage and work both clash easily. Whether control is good asks only whether the one being struck is Useful God or Unfavorable God. Striking the Unfavorable God is a rescue. Striking the Useful God is pulling down the stage. Do not call every control inauspicious.

BaZi Ten Gods combine: who pulls whom away

Combination is pull. The five heavenly-stem combinations almost all happen between two groups that already control each other: Wood–Earth, Wood–Metal, Fire–Metal, Fire–Water, Earth–Water. So stem combinations among the Ten Gods are usually these:

Branch six-combinations have another kind: two branches that generate each other can also combine. Yin–Hai Wood, for example, often sticks Prosperity and Seal together. How to read BaZi Ten God relations: class order

Do not flip one sentence here and one sentence there. You can lock these five steps:

1. Fix the Day Master. Mark where the five Ten God groups sit in stems and branches.
2. Read generate and control first, especially the group being controlled.
3. Then read combination: who pulls whom, whether the pull is Useful God or Unfavorable God, and whether it sits in the natal chart, luck cycle, or annual luck.
4. Split Direct and Indirect. Direct Officer and Seven Killings, Food God and Hurting Officer, Direct Seal and Indirect Seal: the way trouble shows is far apart.
5. Map it onto life. Money, status, backing, your own people, the mouth. When those five match, the verdict can stand.

The natal chart is structure. The luck cycle is a ten-year theme. Annual luck is that year’s people and events. The same Ten God relation, placed on three layers, has completely different weight. Treat annual luck as a lifetime and you will scare yourself to death.

A lookup table so you can match yourself

The table only gives topics. Auspicious or inauspicious still follows Useful God and Unfavorable God. The Useful God being generated is help. The Useful God being controlled or combined away is loss. The Unfavorable God being controlled or combined away is relief.

BaZi Ten God relations FAQ

Are Ten God relations the same as a pattern?

Relations are how the parts move. A pattern is the structure the whole chart builds, such as Killings-generate-Seal pattern or Food-God-controls-Killings pattern. Learn the parts first, then talk pattern. Without the parts, a pattern is an empty name.

Do Direct and Indirect always have to be split?

Yes. Friend combining Wealth and Rob Wealth combining Wealth: one is you sticking, one is friends competing to stick. Food God controlling Killings and Hurting Officer seeing Officer: one can more often get things done, one more often clashes. Skip Direct and Indirect and the advice you give people will run the wrong way.

Do Ten Gods relate to palaces? Does BaZi have twelve palaces?

BaZi uses Ten Gods to see “what force,” and uses Year pillar for parents, Month pillar for siblings, Day branch for spouse, Hour pillar for children to see “who it lands on.” Read force first, then people. Do not paste Zi Wei Dou Shu’s twelve palaces straight on.
