Beginners of Doushu can recite the twelve palaces: Life Palace is me, Spouse is marriage, Wealth is money. In practice, matters are not one palace, one topic.
Why? Each palace still has hidden uses. Some come from the opposite, sanhe, shared lineage (gongzong). Some come from “what this palace is on someone else’s chart.” Some even line up with rooms in the house. Students find it messy because textbooks only give the first layer. The first layer can tell a story. The second layer can judge small events.
Surface names: Twelve palaces. Below, hidden meanings palace by palace. The rule: the surface is the name; the hidden is the relationship. What palaces are to each other matters more than one palace’s adjectives.
Life Palace: the taiji point, the “I” that can make or break
Life Palace is the centre of the chart. It is the mental and thinking I, the I that affects whether people nearby are glad. Your mood drops, and the air at home changes. So Life Palace is not only a character test. It is also “where this person takes the room.”
Hidden, Life Palace is also like a corridor: people enter and leave the whole chart from here. The corridor bright, the palaces more open. The corridor jammed, the person feels nothing goes well—when it is this door of theirs that has not opened.
Reading Life Palace, do not only praise the plus. The same set of character that can get things done, in another setting, is the set that ruins them. Ziwei’s deciding, Qisha’s fierceness, Tianji’s change: two faces of the same knife.
Siblings Palace: brothers and sisters, and close-range strength
On the surface, siblings. Hidden, a lot, and very usable.
It is the couple’s inner chamber, because the counterpart of Wealth and Property throws the “pillow side” layer across. It is also the savings seat, like Property to Wealth: whether money can be kept sometimes is not read from Wealth but from Siblings. It is a constitution seat, because the Health–Career relation projects here; also an achievement seat, social standing strength, Travel and Siblings sharing lineage.
As people, close friends, mother, eldest daughter, can all show through Siblings. At home, it often maps to the bed.
So Siblings empty, or heavy with malefics, is not always “no siblings.” It may be no one close, savings that will not stay, an uneasy bed, or the strength-seat for getting things done unstable. Asking “is there anyone nearby I can work with” often starts here.
Spouse Palace: marriage, also making a home and the body one shows
On the surface: the other sex, feeling, marriage. Hidden, it is the making-a-home seat. Property’s shared lineage shows here: whether there is a home is often Spouse and Property together.
It is also a body-form seat. Health’s Property projects onto Spouse; figure, complexion, the face shown to a partner, take flavour here. Travel’s Career seat landing on Spouse: going out, career ties away from home, may come through a partner. Happiness wealth also becomes “blessing-wealth that comes because of this relationship.”
At home, it often maps to the kitchen. The kitchen is the fire of the house; Spouse Palace is too. Fire strong, people in the house; fire chaotic, food, sleep, and feeling go chaotic together.
Marriage is not only Spouse. Wealth is the partner’s Spouse Palace. The two palaces together are “our complete marriage.” One palace alone treats the other person as your accessory.
Children Palace: children, also peach blossom, remarriage, and later life
On the surface, children. In general, it is children; in particular, it often answers the eldest first. Kin from marriage, remarriage, a secondary partner, peach blossom outside marriage, all crowd here. The reason is simple: Children is one of the correspondences of sex and the reproductive system (Health’s Happiness), also going out and accident (Property’s Travel), also partnership (Friends’ Career).
Happiness shares lineage with it, so later life and cause-and-effect often leave a tail in Children. Doting on a child, being pulled by a child, whom one leans on when old: do not read these only as fertility.
At home, it often maps to a spare bedroom and the front door. The front door is coming and going, whether outsiders can enter. Children Palace peach blossom mixed: the door is busier. Not always bad. Read the stars.
Natal Ji entering Children more often means you dote on and worry about the child. Do not jump to “harms the eldest.” General and particular have to be split. This palace is where readings go wrong most easily.
Wealth Palace: money in the pocket, also marriage’s counterpart
On the surface: cash, pocket, the card. One’s own deposits are drawn from here. Borrowing, owing, is not a layer this palace can fully represent.
Hidden: nephews (Siblings’ children), the eldest’s economy (Children’s Siblings), friends’ wealth (Friends’ Property). More crucial: it is marriage’s counterpart seat, that is, the partner’s Spouse Palace. So for marriage, Spouse plus Wealth is complete.
“Silk” also has the sense of cloth and dress. Happiness rules likes; likes show on the outside; clothes and jewellery come through Wealth. How a person spends is often more honest than the salary they report.
At home it maps to the entrance. The entrance is coming and going, the first look. Wealth chaotic: the first look of the house is chaotic—things piled, bills piled, people in and out with no rule.
Friends’ wealth seat still has an old line: other people’s richness sometimes has to be accumulated with my money. Like gathers like. Great houses seldom take in the shabby; broken houses gather wanderers. Whether friends will make you lose money: Wealth and Friends together.
Health Palace: the body, also mood and the place of work
On the surface: health, fat and thin. It is not the whole of lifespan. Length of life has to be estimated with Happiness, Travel, and how thick Children’s blessing is. Judging lifespan from Health alone is blunt.
Hidden: Health is mood and behaviour, the partner’s reproductive system (Spouse’s Children), eldest daughter-in-law (Children’s Spouse), workplace (Career’s Property), luck of the house (Property’s Career). It shares lineage with Happiness. Body and mind are one set, not two.
At home it maps to the living room. The living room is how people sit, how they lose temper, how they spread the body in front of family. Health heavy with malefics is not always hospital. It may be an atmosphere at home that makes it hard to breathe.
Travel Palace: going out, also the ability shown to society
On the surface: the post-horse, going out, moving. Hidden: the image formed outside, social standing, the sign of ability. Happiness and Career are each other’s fortune and encounter; Travel is often that report card.
Display of wit: warmth, resolve, quickness, are mostly seen in Travel. So Travel takes Parents as a shared-lineage seat among six. The more one learns (Parents Palace), the more wit can show outside. Not rote. Whether common sense and seeing can be used in a room.
It is also grandchildren (Children’s children), and shares lineage with the achievement palace and Siblings. At home it maps to the master bedroom. The master bedroom is how a person recovers into themselves toward the outside; Travel is how they send the inner self out the door.
Friends Palace: friends, also competition, exams, and giving
On the surface: relating. Hidden, it is a competition seat. Campaigns and exams lean here, because rivals and people in the same field are “friends” in a wide sense.
It is one of marriage’s six shared-lineage seats. An elder brother’s or younger brother’s social ties, the eldest’s cash, the father’s career, a superior’s work, can all show through Friends. Happiness and Property project here; it is also the shrine seat, the accumulating-merit and giving seat.
At home it maps to the shrine. What friends a person keeps, and what they worship and respect, are often the same line. Friends Palace dirty is not telling you to delete all friends. It is telling you to see: onto which kind of person you give your energy.
Career Palace: work, also luck and ancestral graves
On the surface: work, the way of earning. The yang extreme among the palaces, so it also has the sense of a luck seat: some people work, and timing comes by itself.
Hidden: it is the “wu-wife” seat, feeling outside a proper marriage (Spouse’s Travel); the eldest’s body; also ancestral graves. Career looking at feng shui and ancestral graves is not a superstition add-on. This palace already ties to “that ground behind, those people.”
At home it maps to the study and the left neighbour. The study is where work is done. Career empty or with malefics is not always unemployment. It may be no corner in which work can be done.
Property Palace: home and storing, the sum of wealth
On the surface: house, family. Hidden: clan kin—uncles, cousins. Wealth shares lineage with it. Property is often read as the sum of wealth, storing, settling. Money in the pocket is Wealth. Money turned into house, into things, into a family floor, is Property.
Taking Property as the body, many charts first ask: does this person have a place to land. Without a body, the other palaces’ uses drift.
Happiness Palace: hobbies, blessing, lifespan, and cause-and-effect
On the surface: blessing, enjoyment. Hidden: hobbies, a kink, cause-and-effect, the grave after death, the partner’s work, shared lineage with Health, lifespan, the grandfather.
At home it maps to graves and the right neighbour. Happiness is what a person does after the door is shut. Whether someone will live well: Career tells you how they earn; Happiness tells you whether, once earned, they can sleep, or spend it filling a kink that will not fill.
Parents Palace: elders, learning, documents, and light
On the surface: parents. Hidden: superiors, teachers, learning, cultivation, bearing, looks, documents, borrowing, the palace of light. Travel’s shared lineage sits here. Part of the capital of encounter and standing is given by Parents Palace.
At home it maps to a small sitting room. That is where guests and elders are received, where face is set out. A fast screen of learning from Parents Palace: Parents Palace and learning.
How to use hidden meanings in a reading without dizzying yourself
Do not open the second layer of all twelve palaces at once. Ask a question, open those palaces.
Marriage: Spouse, Wealth, then Happiness and Children.
Money: Wealth, Property, Friends.
Work: Career, Life, Travel, Parents.
Body: Health, Happiness, Travel, Children.
Shared lineage and counterparts: pull them when that question needs them. Memorise hidden meanings as an encyclopaedia in one go, and you still forget in practice. Treat them as a toolbox. Open the right compartment when needed, and the twelve palaces start to listen.
Palace overlap (natal, major luck, annual stacked) changes hidden meanings again: Palace overlap. Seasoning of stars: Sihua, 10-stem sihua.

Zi Wei Dou Shu hidden palace meanings FAQ
Rooms at home mapping to palaces—is that a feng shui use?
It is an extension of “image” in Doushu. Use it as a reference, not as an interior plan. Living room to Health is not telling you to throw out the sofa. It reminds you to look at the atmosphere of the public space at home, and at body habits.
When hidden meaning and the main star conflict, whom to hear?
Hear main stars and sihua first. Hidden meanings explain “why this matter links to another.” For example Spouse good, Wealth very poor: marriage’s counterpart seat is weak; money and fairness in the relationship will have trouble. That does not overturn Spouse. It supplies the other half.
The twelve palaces all have bed, kitchen, shrine—won’t they repeat?
They will, because a house is alive. When they repeat, look at the question: sleeping badly, look at Siblings (bed) and Health; eating off, look at Spouse (kitchen); the mind uneasy, look at Friends (shrine) and Happiness. Images can overlap. The question cannot.
