The Fourteen Main Star Types and Meanings in Ziwei Doushu
Understand the five elements, qi nature, and core traits of the fourteen main stars, grouped into leadership, analytical, and support-oriented types, with practical notes on how they behave when seated in the Life Palace.
On this page
In Ziwei Doushu, the fourteen main stars are the real lead characters of the chart. You can think of them as fourteen different personality archetypes, each with its own temperament, working style, and life orientation. If you want to understand a chart quickly, the simplest place to start is the star sitting in the Life Palace. Once you identify that central "soul figure," the tone of the whole chart begins to emerge.
Below, we group the fourteen stars according to five elements, qi character, and core traits, then organize them into three broad categories: leadership, analytical, and support-oriented stars. This is meant to make the system more approachable for beginners. Different schools may adjust some details, but the overall direction remains similar. We will also look at how each star tends to behave when it sits in the Life Palace, and then close with a few classic star combinations. If you have not yet cast a chart, it helps to start with the Complete charting guide.
Basic profiles of the fourteen main stars
Let us begin with a quick scan of each star's core attributes. The five elements - metal, wood, water, fire, and earth - affect how a star behaves in different palaces and how it interacts with other stars:
- Ziwei: yin earth, transforms qi into dignity - the emperor star, a natural leader.
- Tianji: yin wood, transforms qi into benevolence - clever, responsive, full of ideas.
- Taiyang: yang fire, transforms qi into nobility - radiant, warm, and proactive.
- Wuqu: yin metal, transforms qi into wealth - firm, practical, and highly action-oriented.
- Tiantong: yang water, transforms qi into blessing - easygoing, cheerful, and pleasant to be around.
- Lianzhen: yin fire, transforms qi into restraint - principled, disciplined, with an artistic and romantic edge.
- Tianfu: yang earth, transforms qi into authority - steady, managerial, excellent at preservation.
- Taiyin: yin water, transforms qi into abundance - refined, gentle, and emotionally subtle.
- Tanlang: yang wood/water, transforms qi into peach blossom - versatile, charismatic, and rich in desire and vitality.
- Jumen: yin water - eloquent, perceptive, but easily associated with disputes.
- Tianxiang: yin earth/water - upright, balanced, and highly capable as a supporting figure.
- Tianliang: yang earth - principled, elder-like, and associated with longevity.
- Qisha: yin metal - decisive, forceful, and pioneering.
- Pojun: yin water - disruptive, innovative, and willing to tear down and rebuild.
Leadership stars: born to steer the ship
These stars tend to carry natural leadership presence, a strong sense of responsibility, and organizational ability. They are well suited to decision-making and team direction. The downside is that they can sometimes come across as strong-willed or controlling.
Ziwei
Ziwei is the classic imperial star, carrying natural dignity and authority. People with Ziwei in the Life Palace often care about respect, order, and the bigger picture.
Life Palace expression: steady, composed, and naturally central in social settings. Good for entrepreneurship or management, though it helps to listen more and avoid becoming overly proud or isolated.
Tianfu
Tianfu is the Southern Dipper's imperial steward, practical and dependable, like an excellent household or institutional manager.
Life Palace expression: grounded, reliable, and fond of stability. Strong in planning, finance, and operations, though sometimes less inclined toward bold innovation.
Wuqu
Wuqu is both a wealth star and a martial star: tough, efficient, and not afraid of hard work.
Life Palace expression: highly capable in execution and often good with money. Emotional expression can be restrained, so romantic communication may feel less natural.
Tianxiang
Tianxiang resembles the ideal minister: proper, coordinated, and attentive to image and detail.
Life Palace expression: upright, polished, and good at administration, public relations, or supportive leadership. Very likable, though sometimes so concerned with balance that decisive momentum becomes weaker.
Qisha and Pojun
These two stars are strong representatives of the pioneering type. Qisha resembles a general - bold and decisive - while Pojun likes to break old structures and start over.
Life Palace expression: Qisha brings action and courage; Pojun brings reinvention and a willingness to begin from zero. Both can produce an exciting but more turbulent life path.
Analytical stars: quick minds and strategic thinking
These stars tend to excel in observation, planning, communication, and problem solving. They are often well suited to creative, intellectual, or highly communicative fields.
Tianji
Tianji is the strategist of the chart: lively, intelligent, and extremely quick to respond.
Life Palace expression: mentally agile, well suited to creative planning, consulting, or technical work. The challenge is overthinking, anxiety, or scattered focus.
Taiyang
Like the Sun itself, Taiyang is warm, outward, and inspiring.
Life Palace expression: enthusiastic, generous, and ambitious. Strong for teaching, sales, or service-oriented work. If overly intense, it can lead to burnout, so rest and boundaries matter.
Jumen
Jumen is the analytical debater: observant, articulate, and mentally sharp, but also prone to friction through speech.
Life Palace expression: excellent for law, consulting, research, or investigation. Learning the art of timing and tact in communication is essential.
Lianzhen
Lianzhen is principled, disciplined, and often carries a distinctive artistic or romantic quality beneath the surface.
Life Palace expression: upright, structured, and suitable for work that requires either strong systems or refined creativity. The temper can run hot, so maturity and self-cultivation help.
Support-oriented stars: gentle, sensitive, and relational
These stars are softer in style and often more emotionally aware. They are well suited to service, design, counseling, art, and other roles that require empathy or delicacy.
Tiantong
Tiantong represents ease, blessing, and a naturally pleasant temperament.
Life Palace expression: kind, easygoing, and socially well liked. The risk is becoming too passive or insufficiently driven, so initiative is something to cultivate.
Tianliang
Tianliang is lofty, principled, and elder-like - something between a teacher and a moral guide.
Life Palace expression: scholarly, caring, and suited to education, advisory work, or research. It can also bring a touch of pride or emotional distance.
Taiyin
Taiyin is delicate, imaginative, and emotionally rich, with strong artistic sensitivity.
Life Palace expression: gentle and caring, often suitable for writing, design, beauty, or nurturing professions. Because emotions run deep, there can be a tendency toward withdrawal or overthinking.
Tanlang
Tanlang is versatile, magnetic, and highly adaptable, but also rich in appetite and desire.
Life Palace expression: outgoing, socially skilled, and broadly interested. Excellent for creative, entertainment, or business-facing roles, though self-restraint is important.
The "chemical reactions" of star combinations
The Life Palace rarely contains only one main star. Often, two stars share the palace, or a strong pattern appears through sanfang sizheng. That makes the personality picture much richer:
- Ziwei and Tianfu together: a dignified and steady leadership pattern with strong managerial ability.
- Ji-Yue-Tong-Liang: the combination of Tianji, Taiyin, Tiantong, and Tianliang produces intelligence, refinement, and strong support or professional talent.
- Wuqu and Tanlang: practical ability combined with creativity, often suggesting both financial skill and artistic or social talent.
- Shapo-Lang: Qisha, Pojun, and Tanlang form a highly dynamic pattern of boldness, reinvention, and change - often suited to entrepreneurship or high-risk environments.
- Taiyang and Jumen: warmth plus eloquence creates strong expression, but also requires caution around conflict and gossip.
Closing
The main stars are only the structural framework of Ziwei Doushu, like the skeleton of a person. To read the deeper layers of destiny, you still need the auxiliary stars, shensha, and especially the dynamic influence of sihua, major luck cycles, and annual timing.
